| ->> I have a speck on the sensor of my G10 and would like to have it cleaned. Being a Nikon SLR shooter I'm not a CPS member, and need some recommendations on where to send this P&S and how much it might cost to have it cleaned. |

->> I had the same problem with my G10. I am CPS but when I got ahold of them, they said...
PowerShots are not repaired in our Jamesburg facility. You would have to send it to the address listed below. You can call them at 800-828-4040
Canon
1440 Chase Ave
Elk Grove Village, IL. 60007
630-850-6500

I sent off the camera and it had its sensor cleaned and was given a thorough checkup and sent back without charge. |

->> Update: I just sent my G10 in to Canon and they want $167.94 just to clean it. Maybe it's because I'm not a CPS member, but regardless that price is pretty outrageous for a simple cleaning. When I called them they told me that because the sensors are so small in these cameras they typically just replace the sensor.
Has anyone else had this experience? It seems crazy for a camera cleaning to cost almost half the value of the camera. |

| ->> My G9 died after 13 months of use. That's what I paid to resurrect the camera from the dead. They said it was the power control unit that died on mine. It worked out since the sensor also had dust on it. My wife's Canon p&s cost $160 so the price does hurt a bit. I doubt that a Powershot camera falls under CPS coverage. |

| ->> Good to know, Harrison. I only mentioned the CPS membership because Harrison stated he is a member and had his cleaned for free. And while I certainly don't expect to get free service I do think $149 flat is too steep for a P&S cleaning. |

->> CPS membership aside, Canon has a recall in effect for a flaw in the G10, it is for cameras within a specific serial number range.
My G10 is one of the affected cameras, it also had also developed several spots on the sensor which I think could have been a condensation issue. I made note of this when I sent it to Canon at the address in the second post above.
Canon fixed the recall issue and cleaned the sensor, which could have been a replacement, all I know is the spots were gone when it was returned.
All done for free, including shipping both ways. |

| ->> I was looking at buy a G-10 down the road for a vacation camera. How does a G-10 get sensor spots? The lens isn't removable right? |

->> Clark -
My guess is the dust/moisture works its way past the seals of the lens, which expands/contracts when it the body is turned on/off and when zoomed in/out. |

->> Bradly, sorry to hear that. They never asked me if I was CPS. They just took my info and fixed the sensor spot. Like Clark asked, I am dumbfoudned that a sensor sport on a P&S can be the responsibility of anybody but the camera manufacturer consdiering that you cannot open the body to the outside environment.
I have another G10 question to the collective crew here. My G10 has lost an exterior screw in the camera strap mount bracket on the left side of the camera. I have discerned thru Google that this is a 1.6 x 4.5mm screw. Canon customer service number has disconnected me twice while trying to get me over to parts. So I am giving up on them for right now.
Does anybody else have any good suggestions for sourcing a screw that will fit this metric spec? I am going to try an eyeglass store and see what I can find. |
