->> Hi All,
Just checking to see if anyone else will be in South Africa for the FIFA World Cup.
If you have any pertinent news, links or other information, please post it here.
I'll be there June 4-17.
That said, if there are any photo editors out there needing any stories shot, feel free to contact me! |

| ->> How easy is it to get a pass for the world cup?, and would it be easy to get work with a photography agency at this late stage? |

->> Mark and I worked together here in San Antonio for ten years before he started freelancing.
He's a great great photographer that did everything from embedding for the Iraq invasion, to Spurs NBA Championships, to local high school sports and features.
So give him a call or drop him a line. I'm sure he would do a great job.

->> Mchael,
World Cup credentials are difficult to get for many news organizations. The difficulty is much greater as a freelancer, and at this point in time, I'd say nearly impossible. I believe the deadline for applying was last December. |

| ->> Mark, What games will you be doing at the world cup?, or if you get a pass, can you do any game, and the final? |

->> I had a credential but am no longer working with the credentialing client. Never one to let a plane ticket go to waste, I'm now going as a fan for a few of the games.
Getting a credential this late though? You'd practically have to call in a favor to Sepp Blatter. |

->> You know if you have Sepp Blatter's number he deserves (another) angry phone call after the way he handled that mess.
I'm going to be back in my home town of London for the World Cup and I'm planning on shooting some features of the World Cup madness while I'm there.
(Come on England!)

| ->> For anyone who's going, make sure you have enough empty pages in your passport. South Africa has a rule that they selectively enforce, that requires two completely empty visa pages in your passport. This doesn't include the last couple pages which are amendments. The airlines are left to enforce this rule, and simply will not let you on the plane (and that's the best case scenario, if you somehow make it there without enough pages, they will throw you in prison). In a situation like this, it will ultimately mean you don't get to go because flights are so packed that if you don't make your original flight, there are no other seats to be had. |

->> Mchael,
I'm not credentialed for shooting games, as I have other particular stories I'm working on. I'm not really sure how the credentialing system works in this particular case.
Mostly I'll be in Johannesburg and Pretoria, but might take three days or so in Cape Town. My main two games of interest are the opener RSA vs. MEX in Joburg and ENG vs. USA the following day in Rustenburg. |

->> I have only been to South Africa once, but it was an eye opener from a safety issue. There are places, you should not go. And certainly not go with a camera in plain view.
As I was told by staff at the University of Johannesburg when I wanted to photograph the daytime street scenes in downtown outside the secure school..."if you make it back here, you certainly won't come back with your cameras."
I did drive places in a rental car on my own but was very aware of the possible "smash and grab" dangers. Do not have a camera bag / back pack or case, sitting on the seat, front or back. In some areas, it very likely will be gone. All gear needs to be locked in the trunk, out of site.
A University official who I spent a lot of time with has had a gun pointed at him and car-jacked three times.
A journalist I met watched as her husband was shot dead in their home.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, but to make them very aware that you are in a much different place. Going to the old downtown of J-bourg, Soweto or Alexandra, without a local who really knows what they are doing is not advised.
There were also amazingly friendly, polite and helpful people everywhere, that I met and photographed. I traveled through Soweto several days with a local woman. I never walked alone. I was warned that would be "crazy."
I spent 17 days in the Johannesburg area photographing orphanages and HIV/AIDS facilities. http://www.sportsshooter.com/dchidley/aids_africa/
A couple of months ago a friend of mine took a photo tour group throughout South Africa and despite a lot of precautions, yes one photographer was the victim of a smash and grab and lost his camera gear.
If I had the opportunity, I certainly would have loved to be there for the World Cup. Most people are good, gracious hosts. It will be crazy enthusiastic but, and I hope not, it could be crazy dangerous too. There is always a few who are going to take advantage of the visitors.
Use caution, and as many street smarts as you can muster and don't travel alone. |

->> If you don't have your fifa credentials you most likely won't get them anymore. Applications where due in January!
I will be there June 6th until July 18th, mainly in the Pretoria/Johannisburg area covering the German Team and as many other games as possible. |

->> Watched a tv show here in Norway were a reporter travels around the world to watch local derbies. He stands with the "hard core" supporters of one of the teams and a tv crew is with him.
At the match in South Africa someone stole his iPhone while they where making the show. Even though he knew who took it he was too afraid to do anything about it. |
