An Open Letter to Matt Hevezi

->> Matt,
Maybe you remember me. We met a couple of times, and exchanged emails about photography through the years.
Some of the current members here won't recognize your name. But many will. We remember your outstanding images and your enthusiastic contributions to the community here.
After about 2004, I didn't hear from you. Then very recently I read this:
http://www.gq.com/news-politics/politics/201003/few-proud-broken
and this:
www.lariaminfo.org/pages/pdfs/ordered-into-madness.pdf
Please know that while every American has their own opinion about war, the great majority support and care for those of you have served, and are serving our behalf.
I'm not sure if you ever drop by Sportsshooter anymore, but if you do, I hope you will share your work and rejoin the community here.
You are a tremendous talent and we need to see your photos.
Wherever you are, I hope you are at peace.
Respectfully,
Rod Mar |

->> Rod - Thank you so much for posting this, and for directing me to the links. I have thought about Matt several times over the years since I last saw him on SS, wondering what ever happened to the Gunney. Even came across a pic of him from an old Luau when we got to meet in person. He is a great talent, and a valued member of the community, as well as a friend who I had exchanges with many times through SS.
Matt - I, too, hope that you are doing well. I also hope that you know that you are very well liked and respected in the community.
Be well.

| ->> Heavy Z: we met at SSA, sinking simultaneously into sun-drenched chairs in the hotel lobby between sessions -- perhaps we had even just heard Rod Mar speak! Sleep deprived after considerable travel and reconnecting with an old buddy, you introduced yourself to me. But, you quickly dispensed with superficial chit-chat, instead inviting a conversation about your Service, life in Okinawa, enduring friendships, family. You spoke about your mother and her professional example. I was instantly engaged by your warmth, disarmed by your accessibility, and struck by your command of what is important-with-a-capital-"I" and by your candor and urgency in discussing it. Your follow-up and our correspondence later -- including your continued encouragement to submit work to gallery projects in Oceanside-- were welcomed and nourishing. Matt, know that you and your contributions are missed. Please don't be a stranger to your old friends on SportsShooter. |

->> Like Mike I had just run across a Luau photo of The Gunney and wondered where he had gone.
Best wishes ... if you should read this. |

->> Many thanks to Rod for finding this. I too had several wonderful conversations with Matt at the 2003 and 2004 Luaus, and had wondered what had become of him in the years that followed as our exchange of e-mails stopped.
Matt, your friends are thinking of you and wish you the best. Be well my friend. |

->> I do not think he still visits this site but I do want to say a few words.
Matt was an inspiration and role model. I met him at the second Sports Shooter Luau where he taught me a simple lighting technique that I still use today.
He inspired me to join the military and I served in the USAF for two years. I separated back in 2008.
When I worked for the CA State Assembly, he helped me reach out to Veterans who were in need.
He has always been a great friend and I hope I can get back in touch with him. |

->> Thanks Rod. I met Matt, rather, he introduced himself to me and started a conversation, at the last Luau. I have to admit the only time I thought of him after that was when an old thread was dug up and I saw his greyed-out avatar and wondered what had happened to him.
It's not only sad, but an embarrassment to our country to read what did happen.
I do hope he is well - he seemed to be a really good soul. |

->> Jody,
I tried to send you an email, but it seemed to have bounced back. I'd like to share some of my experiences about the military that I hope you can pass along to your son before he makes the decision. |

->> Rod,
Thanks for posting this.......I wondered about Matt.
Matt,
I was VERY fortunate to meet you and Rod at the Luau's back then. Your interest and sharing with my students at that time were quite extraordinary and your talent and drive were an example for all. Though we didn't always see your work on the front pages, we could see the standard you made come through in the work we saw in your galleries. I think of you and your words often, and wondered where in the world you may be.
Still teaching, AND learning
