Setting up my FCP Ver. 7, capture woes.

->> Ok, so I just got an upgrade of FCP, to Version 7. I'd been using Version six, and had it configured so I could capture HD video from my V1U while I was doing other tasks, like working in photoshop, emailing, whatever. I couldn't have 20 programs open, but a few were fine, no problems with capture.
FYI: I'm running a Mac, OS 10.5.8, 2.52 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Anyways, I tried capturing today with the new FCP upgrade and got tons of dropped frames if I tried to do other stuff while FCP worked in the background. PF Bentley always cautioned against doing this in Platypus classes, but who wants to wait for a 30 minute capture?
I know the obvious answer is I need a faster Mac and more RAM, but are there any Preference or memory cache tweaks I might try?
Thanks in advance!

->> Are you capturing to a 7200RPM external drive? That can help avoid drop outs when capturing.
It doesn't have to be expensive. You can get a 7200RPM bus-powered external Firewire drive from http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go for around $100. |

| ->> Good point Jim. Nope, have had those problems with 5400rpms, as you indicate. I usually capture to a 7200 or the mac's internal drive (did so today). |

->> Are you capturing to the same physical drive as the one where the FCP application is installed? If so, capture to a separate physical drive.

->> Jim, good suggestion, but I gave that a go last week, to the little Acomdata drive I've used flawlessly in the past with FCP 6 and FCP 5. Clean heads, new tape, yet still three sections of dropped frames (four files when there should be one). I'll get our IT folks to bang around on my lapper this week, maybe something went wonky with the FCP install.
Times like this make me think I should be doing 100 percent of my video with my Mk IV and a Marantz. |

->> I might be off, but if its the new Final Cut 7, then the system software might be a little behind. I think it is more optimized to Snow Leopard. I know since I upgraded, I am running much, much smoother on Final Cut, and I am on a Macbook pro 2.4ghz, 4GB RAM, DDR2 SDRAM with 10.6.3 processing 5D and XHA1 files, which aren't as friendly to ingest as the Sony is.
Also, have you done an extensive repair of permissions, optimization lately? I use Drive Genius a couple times a month and it seems to keep things optimal. |

| ->> Hmmmmm, interesting info Scott. Thank you. I'll get with our IT folks to see if we have an OS upgrade I can get my hands on. I'll check out Drive Genius as well. |

| ->> Also, I would look into trashing some preferences too in FCP and checking that the FCP preferences in version six are trashed, as they can sometimes be accessed when they shouldn't be. They can be the gremlins hiding in the machinery more often than not, and usually the last thing I always remember to think about. |

->> Scott, et al.,
Assuming everything else was the same, did you notice that "c'mon already!" things like rendering and exporting sped up when you went to the newer 10.6 OS? |

->> Well, I pretty much jumped to the 5d when I switched and downloaded the canon plug-in and converting footage to ProRes simple for the projects I am working on, so I don't know if its quantifiable. I just sold my tape based system and haven't had to ingest on tape since I switched.
Sorry |

->> PF,
:-)
To make things worse, I did a project Saturday mixing 24p from the Mk IV AND 30i from an A1U. Working with them on the same timeline was a bear, but found it looked GREAT after an Apple ProRes 422 LT export. Note to self: 24p and 30i are not good bedfellows. |

->> Ok, another question for you FCP whizzes out there PF
I've been having pretty good results with using the ProRes 422 (LT) codec (found under A/V settings---Sequence Presets, to work with my Mk IV files (24p), but if I drop in still images from this or any other camera (doesn't matter which format, jpeg/tiff/pict. . .), I need red-bar renders every time I move the B-Roll still around.
Should I be using another format besides 422 (LT)?
And, what of you Nikon D3S users? A co-worker has been having a tough time working with his AVI files, and I want to help him troubleshoot his stuff. |

->> Bob,
FCP 7 works with the new files, no need for MPEG streamclip, which is what I used to use for FCP 6. They not upgraded you guys yet? ;-)
