Best Labels for Equipment?
Travis Haughton, Photographer

->> So after battling with a few different types of label makers, I still haven't found anything that will stay attached to camera equipment. The Dymo seems to work okay, but always peels at the corners until it falls off.

Ideally, it would be something that we can put our name, phone number and possibly an ID number.

Anybody have any recommendations for what you're using?

->> I use a Brother P Touch label maker with industrial strength labels. Plenty of room for your info, plus logos and more. Have not had any come off so far after a year or so.

->> +1 for the Brother P Touch label.

I have also found a system that works great for any lost items. I have used this system for over five years and all has been perfect. I lost a lens once and because of the system it was returned.

Good luck with what ever you choose.

->> Brother P-touch is cool. It's cheap and small so you can pack it in an equipment case for travel which is nice. I label all of our cameras, lenses, and larger grip equipment with them. The labels on the magic arms last for a season or so which is pretty amazing considering how beat up they get. They do start to peel eventually depending on location and wear, but I minimize it by cleaning the surface before placing the label and trimming them to an exact dimension we need.

->> For lots of the small stuff....i just use one of the hundreds of return address labels that all those stupid organizations keep sending out in hopes of a donation. I must have 4000 of them. Cut em smaller if need be, but they hold up well and are free

->> Have labels printed by Maverick Label! I have them and I've also recommended them to a few other SS members, who've all been very pleased. They're very durable, stick to gear better than P-Touch labels, and look more professional. They can also do sequential numbering on the labels if you're looking to put ID numbers or barcodes on gear. Maverick offers the basic IDMyStuff labels, as well as custom labels. I recommend doing .5" x 1.25" on metallic silver, with a clear overlay. You can add your company logo, do multiple colors, etc. They look very sharp.

->> Try www.MaverickLabel.com I have their labels on all my equipment and none of them have come off. I did sell two pieces though and when I took the labels off, there was no marking on the equipment.
The labels are i 4 different sizes and have 4 lines of info.

->> It really depends on what you are labeling. For cables what I do is use a mailing label like Brad and then slip a section of clear heat shrink tubing over it. Hit it with a BIC and it's permanent (sort of).

For lenses I just use a p-Touch on the foot and a second under the rubber focus ring. For bodies I put a label on the the prism that tells me which body Dx#1 Dx#2 etc as I have different FW loaded in each and put a second id in the battery compartment.

Bottom line is that a label will only help to ID your gear in a pile of remotes or other situations where there is a ton of gear in one spot and you or another HONEST shooter wants to be sure that they are taking what is theirs. It won't do anything to deter a thief.

->> I'm sure maverick labels are great, but I'll stick with the p-touch from Brother for a few reasons.
I've labeled Tupperware that has gone off to college, dishes at family reunions, home theatre cables, Pocket Wizards, CF cards, parts bins on the workbench and a batch more that preprinted labels wouldn't handle.
Some of the labels that I attached to my first CF cards in 2002 are still in place, albeit a bit faded. That leads to the second point: be sure to buy the laminated tape. Our IT guy found out the hard way that the "regular" tape wears out.

I know this is an older thread but the labels work great. bodies, lenses, CF cards, batteries, cell phone, light stands, and any thing else you may be carrying. It just makes things easier.
