->> Just got a new IMac, well refurb. Looking to upgrade the RAM. Looking around and see so many choices. Any recommendations?
Sorry I know this has been asked before. But no matter what combo I put into the search I couldn't find it.
Thanks

->> Both of those recommendations are good and offer easy-to-use guides to getting the proper RAM.
I've heard many folks comment that when they have pulled factory-installed RAM from their computer it is the same sticks that Crucial sells.
I have Crucial RAM running in 3 machines and have never had a problem. |

| ->> After you use the Crucial memory advisor, check other vendors for their RAM - I just bought some Crucial memory at Transintl.com, it was about $10 cheaper and I didn't have to pay sales tax. |

| ->> Can't go wrong with OWC (macsales.com), Crucial, or Trans International. Just make sure a lifetime warranty is offered with the ram you buy. I know OWC has a lifetime warranty. Bot familiar with Crucial or Trans International. |

Hold off on that. I've been told that Apple can refuse to repair a machine under warranty if it has third party RAM installed so you might want to keep the original chips in case you have to send it in for service. |

->> Jim, that may have been the case a long time ago or with macs that do not have user access to RAM modules, but Apple says "You may install memory (RAM, VRAM), and other customer-installable parts without voiding your Apple warranty."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13946
BTW the RAM I got From OWC had an OWC sticker on one side and a Samsung sticker on the other side. The RAM I took out was Apple's OEM Samsung. |

->> I sent my MacBook Pro into Apple for warranty service. They fixed it and sent it back with my Crucial RAM chips removed and in anti-static bags with a warning saying that using non Apple parts would void the warranty. Basically that they'd let me slide this time but don't send it in again with non-Apple parts.
Second time I send the same MacBook Pro in for warranty service, I remove my Crucial RAM sticks and replace them with the original Apple RAM. They service the laptop and return it with Crucial RAM. WTF?!?
So I asked the local Apple dealer who I sent it in through for AppleCare, if they took my RAM as I was pissed that now I had non-standard Apple parts which may give me trouble for future AppleCare service like Jim says above. But the dealer denied swapping the memory and said Apple did it.
I wrote an angry email to Tim Cook at Apple, Jobs was out due to his liver operation, for an explanation and if my warranty was still good.
I got a letter back from Tim Cook saying that yes, my AppleCare was good and the Crucial chips were replaced by Apple and they are up to Apple standards.
So yes, Crucial chips are fine and don't void warranties. Got it straight from the interim CEO. As a long-time Apple dealer I assume OWC also qualifies as having chips that qualify. |

| ->> I had a Power Book G3 Pismo serviced twice under warranty with additional RAM installed that I purchased from OWC ... I know they had to be aware of the RAM as they replaced the processor on the second attempt to fix the problem ... on those models the RAM is sandwiched to the processor ... they returned my laptop with the RAM I had installed .... no mention of voiding the warranty at all .... that was in 2001 .... |
