->> Lens fell out of a backpack today and hit the ground pretty hard. Busted the lens up, no damage to the glass or the body, but the back of the lens completely broke off. Do you guys think this is repairable or is this a lost cause?

| ->> It is most likely repairable. I had the same happen to my 24-70 four days after getting it. It was fixed and sent back quite quickly. That was the Nikon version though. |

->> On the other hand, I stood up while pulling on my camera strap with a D3 and 17-55 attached. Somehow the strap got wound around the lens and in turn around something at ground level. The short version is that I have a $1700 paperweight in the office as Nikon decided the 4 day old lens was beyond economical repair...
Anyone needing parts gimme' a call. |

| ->> Chris try MidState first. They may be cheaper and not fix wise just penny wise. |

| ->> fixable.....unless....the lens is in the dreaded "it's beyond it's life we have no parts" thing that both canon and nikon use sometimes. so be prepared for that if the lens has some age on it. |

->> The 17-40 is actually a fairly recent lens and is on the current CPS service list so there should be no problem getting it repaired by Canon.
If it were the old 17-35, however, as Chuck points out, you'd be SOL as far as Canon is concerned. |

->> Thanks all, took it to a reputable repair shop in Phoenix, looks like it will be easily repaired for about $300.
Great advice and thanks all!
