->> Clearly the best use of craigslist I've seen in awhile.
Two years ago I was ripped off: 400/2.8, Mark III, lighting kit, etc.
I put an ad on craigslist about the stolen gear, someone informed me if was for sale in seattle on POTN. It's a long story, but a UW student bought some of my gear at a very good price off craigslist and was trying to resale it.
I got in touch with him, he called the police, they set up a sting and caught the dude. He went to court and plead out. I got all the gear back except for my 85/1.8. And just the other week I got a form in the mail asking about value for reimbursement from the crook.
I learned a couple things. Cops are worthless in theft cases. They need it handed to them on a silver platter. I basically did their job for them. And, craigslist is a cesspool of stolen goods and illegal activity. |

One of the truest things ever posted on this site. Of all the things I've had stolen over the years one camera was found by a friend of mine (a cop) who was off duty and had a buddy at the pawn shop. he recovered one of two cameras...the detectives in charge....they didn't care. there is so much property crime nowadays the police don't even make half hearted efforts to find the perpetrators.
here's another example that happened this week in raleigh

->> It's a DIY world out there including basic police work. What's next..DIY surgery? embalming?
Actually, in my case, the local cops were more of an obstacle than help. On the other end, the Mukilteo police (near Seattle) were much more helpful and proactive, but it was a much smaller town and they hooked a pretty big fish who ended up having a ton of stolen goods of felonious proportions.
The college student who I was in touch with was just really stupid and opportunistic. Once he figured out what was going on, he did the right thing and helped the police nail the dude. |

->> Why do you say the kid was stupid? He was cooperative with you in getting it returned - you make it sound as if he did even more than the cops, and he wasn't even getting paid.
Sorry if I misunderstood, or don't know the whole story. |
