->> SS member, Matt Stamey, just got back from spending a few days on a boat that was helping out with the spill.
Here is a link to a multimedia piece that he produced from the time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGhCKhu-IZ0 |

->> I was going to take a drive out to Venice last week, but the oil's only showing up on the islands....and the local fishermen are charging $400/hr for boat rides.

->> I'm leaving this afternoon for a week covering the helicopter operations supporting the spill. As a beach dweller here in San Diego, I'd imagine the experience in the Gulf will be an eye opener.

->> I was out in the marshes below Hopedale, La. (between NOLA and Venice) and there was nothing in the bay's or sound at that point. Just lots of boom being put out. It was weird to see humvee's & black hawk's in the fishing towns. that is old news by now.

->> Just got back the other day. This story will continue to get more tragic as the oil slowly makes it's way to shore. Many of us rushed to get down there only to wait for it to hit shore. I covered the fishermen as they are going to get hit the hardest. Oyster fishing is all but done for quite a long time. Maybe a decade? If it gets into the La. marshes, it'll be catastrophic for the seafood industry. There are many stories to be told and the people are all very willing to share. On the Venice side, the locals are milking the media for boat rides and rental rooms. They wanted 400.00 per hour to get to the spill zone. Go to Hopedale/Shell Beach. I found a guy who took 4 of us out for 200.00. We tipped him an extra 100.00. Let me know if you need anymore info.
