->> If I were the other kid, I think it would have walked to the club house after he intentionally shanked one out of bounds. If I can not win by being better than my competition and beating them fair and square, I would rather not win.
Charity is for the Red Cross. Respect the game and your opponent by giving your best effort and being gracious in victory or defeat. |

->> What this kid did (if he actually did it on purpose) was to steal a victory from Doran. Nothing more. If he hit it ob on purpose...then shut up about it and let the other kid win. You dont do charity for publicity.
In all likelihood the kid choked under pressure and invented this story to save face. Either way, Doran's victory is tainted. Either way he was cheated out of the chance of winning.
Last hole of a playoff.....he had every chance to win it on his own legitimately....until the other kid did what he did...intentional or not, he hit it ob. Problem came when he opened up his mouth. If he tanked it, so be it.....but now everyone at nationals will look at Doran as if he didnt earn his spot. If he didnt tank it and concocted this story to cover up his choked shot.....then it is among the worst things you can do in sport. Diminishing the victory of the other player...
I cant believe all the posts declaring this kid a hero. Hero's don't do what they do for publicity. They dont call attention to themselves or their acts...and they certainly dont take away the chance of someone to legitimately win a competition...which on the last tee....Doran had every chance of winning on his own.
Makes me sick actually..... |

->> Brad,
Well said. As an athlete my entire life, this is so bothersome. For those that find it an awesome story, perhaps they haven't ever been a competitive athlete. Making it into a public affair just makes it more distasteful.
This is very different than carrying a runner with a blown out knee around the bases and other such stories.
Just my opinion.

->> From the linked story - "As championships go, both the winning team and winning individual are asked to move on to nationals, so if Whybark won the playoff against Doran, he'd be honoring both spots and Doran wouldn't be asked to move on."
Why not change the rule to make it the winning team and the winning individual, OR the highest-placing individual NOT on the winning team?
Whybark could have then tried to win as an individual and if he won, Doran (who would have finished second) would still get to advance. |

It isn't a sport if you can do it while smoking a cigarette, hence golf is a game and not a sport. |

->> I tend to go more with "If it can't be compared to itself, it's a game"
That includes diving, all the variations of figure skating, anything I've ever seen on x-games, freestyle BMX and motocross, synchronized swimming, cheerleading, and so on.. All activities that require - A Judge - to compare and contrast the results.
Athletic? Abolutely. Sport - nope, a games.
I hold the Olympic motto - Citius, Altius, Fortius - does a reasonably good job of defining sport. |

That's a rather broad assumption and probably incorrect assumption. |

I'm basing this on comparison between the crapitudes on here, versus the attitudes of my teammates, both past and present. |

->> I agree with Kevin, Brad, Peter and others claiming this is not way to go. Once you have been in competitive sport yourself (golf fits into this, even though some of us, including myself, might disagree on this), you look at this a bit different. So I don't consider this as right thing to do. Sure he could do it, but shut up after this. Besides, there are no friends in sport. You have friends before and after race, but during race/match there's no friends, except your teammates in non-individual sports.
And another thing... if this would be done by team/athlete in any of top level leagues/sports, I doubt many would consider this act as great sportsmanship, but as pure cheating, which would be sanctioned on the end... especially when you have bets behind all that ;) |

Crapitudes like " It's funny hearing all this from people who don't compete at either sport or game themselves" obviously.
I golf, therefore I'm in constant competition with myself, the wind, the weather, course designers and all those damn water hazards. |

Though I don't play much now (change in job schedule and having a child did it to me) I was once a single-digit handicap player and competed in a tournaments regularly.
Maybe I never competed for a national title but I did compete in golf (sport or game, whichever definition you want)
And to shift it to photography, would you "throw" an assignment and maybe not file a really nice shot back to the office because your shooting partner at the game hasn't had a front page in a while and you think he deserves it? You'll still get photos inside and a paycheck so what's the big deal? No, you want that front page. You're in competition for good pics against every other photographer at the game. |
