Which printer with Snow Leopard?

->> I did a major upgrade to my main machine...went from a G5 running 10.4 to a Mac Pro w/Snow Leopard (10.6.3). Everything's great--CS4 is zippy...Photo Mechanic has never been faster...new computer smell...yay me.
Until I went to print.
My Mac Pro and my old but trusty Epson 1280 aren't playing well. I've deleted & replaced drivers, fiddled with the print settings and wasted a ton of paper. Best I can do is a slightly muddier, slightly less sharp version of what I used to get with this very same printer on my old computer. I'm open to the possibility of upgrading my 1280 but I see from my Googling that 10.6 is causing a lot of headaches amongst Epson users so my question is--who out there running 10.6 has a printer that is consistently & easily giving them "What You See Is What You Get" results? What model of printer? Thanks. |

| ->> Epson or Mac - not sure which - screwed us with some of our older equipment. My 2200 is kinda hosed on Snow Leopard too. I usually boot off of an external drive with a backup version of my system when it was at 10.5 to use the print utility features. Not a great plan, but then I don't print that much. Maybe you can find some help at: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportSnowLeopard.jsp |

->> Not limited to those models....I had a wireless Lexmark printer in my home office so I could print from anywhere in the house via my MBP but after upgrading the OS to Snow Leopard, had same thing happen-- not playing nice together (actually not playing AT ALL together wirelessly).
Also tried driver updates, Googling the topic, etc... without success. So I have to connect the two via USB cable for printing to work -- but no more wireless printing available through my WiFi network. |

->> Matt,
off topic but thanks for this post. I could never understand why my Epson 1280 is crap on the new MAC when it was perfect on the old G5.
Hoping to hear from others what printers they use so the big clunky 1280 can go and I can finally print at home again |

| ->> same problems here with a 4880 when printing from photoshop. It seems that Apple, Adobe and Epson are all blaming each other for the problem. I have better luck printing from aperture |

->> I am a huge fan of various Canon PIXMA printers. I have a couple of them - an A4 size Pixma ip4500 which does a great job of small prints, runs wirelessly via my Apple Airport Extreme and also prints directly onto CDs and DVDs. For the bigger stuff I have a nice new Pixma ix7000 which isn't as fast as the top of the range model but the image quality is out of this world now that it is all calibrated. I also have an "all in one" MP990 which is shared by the whole household and also runs wirelessly. This one was not really able to be calibrated as well but it still does some great prints.
I ended my relationship with Epson when their ink prices went up here in the UK and many of the inks became difficult to get at discount prices. My local Canon dealer does good deals and I couldn't be happier with the three printers that we have.

| ->> I moved from a PC to a new MPB and had problems printing with my Epson 2200 also. I was not able to set up the right color profile for the paper. It was something to do with the SyncX something or other. I think it started working properly when I made the epson 2200 the default printer, but I tried so many different things I'm not sure. At least my colors are good now. I'm still trying to figure out the page setup options and the epson utlility program does not tell me anything about my ink cartridges. |

->> Thanks Neil Turner, but are you using Apple OS 10.6...? You didn't mention that & I'm trying to find out if anyone at all is successfully printing with Snow Leopard.
So far that answer seems to be no. |

->> Very latest version of Snow Leopard on all of the Macs in the house, one of which is a Macbook Pro with an i5 processor and only a few days old. The other two are a three year old MBP and a Mac Mini which is about two years old, both of which have been repeatedly upgraded.
We also have a couple of Sony Vaio machines (YUK!!!) that work absolutely fine with the set up. |

| ->> I went from Epson 1280 that lasted me a very long time to Epson r2880 a few months ago. Currently running OS 10.6.3 and there have been issues, but the last upgrade from Epson seemed to have worked. Its also a good idea to download updated paper profiles and test them out by soft proofing before final prints and making sure your monitor is calibrated often. The only issue I have with this new set up so far is the ink is hard to find unless it is ordered online. Prints are beautiful too. However, I am sure Epson already has an upgraded model to this machine since its been on the market for almost a year. Cheers! |

| ->> Thanks Scott...I would never have found that on my own. In order to update the printer driver the printer needs to be on while you do the software update, which mine almost never is. My first test print with the new driver is back to the sharpness I had with 10.4, now just gotta finesse the color. All in all it's an improvement. Wouldn't have known without this thread. Thanks! |
