->> Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a new camera, probably a Canon 7D or 5DMKII. What do I need to get good sound?
I want to know about lavalier mics - preferably wireless and on camera mics. What other accessories Do I need?
I have read up on different sites, reviews, etc.. what I want is personal experiences with equipment.
thanks,
Armando |

->> At the Tampa Tribune/WFLA, we were outfitted with kits similar to this outfit:

Super-reliable and very easy to use when setting up interviews. Getting that into the camera body isn't something I'm familiar with, however, but the quality of sound you'll be getting out of these units will be top notch. |

->> If you have the money, Lectrosonics is the best way to go for wireless mics. If you're on a budget, I'd look at the Sennheiser mics. Anything cheaper than those two, you're probably asking for trouble.
As for on-camera mics, I'm not sure what DSLR shooters are using, most of my background is in broadcast video. I have a Sennheiser ME-66 shotgun for my video camera, but it might be a little big for a DSLR setup. RODE has a hotshoe-mounted shotgun mic that might fit the bill.
Lastly, if you're looking for a hand-held stick mic, the Electro-Voice RE50 is an industry standard. It can also be used as a weapon in rough neighborhoods. It's built like a tank.
Hope this helps. |

| ->> One more thing, if you're looking for something better than that stock lav mics that come with wireless systems, the Tram TR50 mics are good all-around mics. They come with a lot of mounting options for various clothing. |

->> Thanks Sean and Kelvin --
@Kelvin how does that Senheiser kit connect to the camera?
Is it via mini cable? Do I need a sound mixer?
thanks again |

->> Check out the BeackTek adapters: http://www.beachtek.com/index.html
They mount to the base of the camera, have 2 XLR inputs, and allow you to bypass the 5D/7D's auto-gain. You can also monitor the sound with headphones while recording. |

->> Armando,
Also worth checking out is (http://www.juicedlink.com/ preamps). Looks like they are releasing a model to beat the AGC on cameras. I have their CX211 model and use the Magic Lantern firmware (http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki). It allows me to view audio levels on the back of the camera and I am able to monitor audio levels by using the A/V out jack on the camera. |

->> I've been using the Sony UWP-V1 wireless lav for about a year and I'm very happy with it:

It works great connected through a Beachtek |

->> I'd definitely consider Alex or Stephen's solutions.
It can be really hard to get consistent, quality audio when you're fighting an in-camera auto-gain. But for simplicity's sake, if you don't want to mess around with the extra bulk of one of those units, it's a standard mini-mini cord connection. It's totally worth it to have some way of manually controlling your audio, for sure, though. |

| ->> sennheiser ew 500 G2. Crystal clear and never had a problem. Also sub 700mhz so there won't be an issue. |
