The AF-S Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II is to ship in late-May 2010 at an expected street price of US$6999.95 in the U.S. This price is US$700 higher than Nikon USA's current expected street price for the existing (and already scarce) 200-400mm.

->> I just bought a slightly used 200-400 VR I from a SS.com member. I don't know what they can do to improve a lens. Incredibly sharp and fast AF. I think Bert wrote that it pairs up nicely with a extender - and it does. While it loses a stop compared to the 400mm f2.8 it replaced, it's versatility more than makes up for the loss of speed. Besides, using it with a D3 .. you just crank up the ISO.

If the new one is better.. well, it's already a terrific lens.

->> I agree Michael. I just purchased a NEW 200-400 VR I, not knowing that a newer model was to be released soon. The photo quality of this lens paired with the D3s is AWESOME. I can't imagine the New Model being much better for $700 more.

Actually I'll wait until the fall for football season and to read reviews, but I am seriously considering this thing for the fall season.

->> Eric - place your order. This is the ultimate sports lens for the D3/D3s. Wide open at f4... it rocks.

Any samples photos shot wide open with this lens? How would you compare it to the focusing/results from the 400 2.8?

->> PJ, I'll try to update my page with some samples. As for wide open, that's all I shoot. Give me a couple of hours...

Since I replaced a AFS, there's no question this lens focuses faster. My 400mm was probably 8-10 years old. A lot has changed. Since I no longer shoot the Vikings in the Metrodome, there wasn't the need for a high speed 400mm. In terms of results, it's very obvious when I have shot HS Soccer the last two weeks that, because of the zoom, your keeper rate is higher. Not having to switch back and forth between cameras with different focal length lenses as often has a lot to do with that.

Obviously the viewfinder is a bit darker, but this lens could impact my usage of my 300mm f2.8, which has ALWAYS been my go to sports lens. I never thought that would happen. Totally impressed with the lens.

->> PJ, check my member page now. Images 7,8, and 10. I've identified those images in the caption as being done with the 200-400mm.

->> At Sports Shooter Academy VII a couple of weeks ago I took the chance to try the 300 f/2.8, the 400 f/2.8 and the 200-400 f/4.

With the newer generation of Nikon cameras and how you can raise the ISO with so little quality loss the 200-400 f/2.8 (for me) easily trumps both the 300 2.8 and the 400 2.8.

(On my member page images 1,2,4 and 6 were taken with the 200-400)

->> What about isolating action with a 2.8 also an extender on a 400 2.8 is common. So for outdoors sports with nice light fine but indoors or concerts?

->> Thanks for posting the images.

I've read on some forums that the 200-400 is supposedly soft at infinity. I'm not saying that's true, just that some people have complained about it.

Wondering what the new 200-400 will offer (other than what appears to be relatively minor tweaks).
