->> found an article on diyphotography.net about Eric Austin who has a rc helicopter he built to handle a 7D to shoot video.

The really cool stuff is over at Vimeo tho. http://vimeo.com/10599330
The video on diy has a small embedded video, the Vimeo link has the full HD footage.
I watched it on my tv in HD. Freakin amazing. I watched it like 3 times as a matter of fact.
It's video, aerials, and gadget pr0n all rolled into one.
He says "Crashing is not an option."
On his Vimeo page he mentions he is building a copter rig to handle a Red One. Not only is crashing not an option with that, I would seriously reconsider even taking off. |

| ->> That's awesome! The photography is cool but I'm more impressed with his piloting. I have a higher-end rc helicopter and they are loads of fun but hard to fly, I don't know how many times I've crashed but each one has been spectacular and expensive. I definitely wouldn't trust myself putting a camera on it unless my intent was to film a pov crash. |

| ->> I agree David, I've seen some other aerial stuff, some linked here, but I thought what set it apart is the HD quality. Guy has a talent for flying, if it had been me that SUV crossing the river would have gone up flames when I crashed into it. |

| ->> That's funny Eric I was thinking somewhat the same thing as he flew over the water. I can imagine my disclaimer for my business limiting subjects to open fields only definitely no water... but seriously I was trying to think of an assignment where I might have used this impressive set of skills, working for the paper I can't think of a recent one that would have enhanced the coverage but maybe it's the kind of thing that by having the skills you are lead to stories that call for it. It would be a very fun dilemma to have. |

| ->> That's a heart breaker....I looked up a similar rig for myself and it was $2700. I think this would a great deal of fun, but you can get a PPL for less than 6K and then rent a plane for around $100/hr whenever you need arial pics. The high end model RCs start around 9K....I'm not sure how a RC chopper would ever be fiscally rational. |

->> John,
The one thing to think about is that the RC chopper can get shots that NO plane or real chopper could EVER get. Real Planes and choppers have minimum altitudes to maintain. The RC chopper provides a birdseye view that you can't get elsewhere. i.e. skimming over the water, shooting the drummer in the field, etc...
Also with a PPL you cannot take photos for hire. You need a CPL to take photos for hire.
Spherical panoramics from RC choppers are also a very unique image you can't get elsewhere.
I've done the RC chopper with a camera thing for years, not cheap stuff, you're looking at an easy $5000 for something to lift an DSLR, and that is the very cheap end.
Plus you're looking at an easy year to learn how to fly the thing, you have to put safety first, think of it like an inverted lawnmower. |

->> Scott is dead on. Just like I would never try to fly a real helicopter and shoot at the same time, I wouldn't try to fly one of these and shoot at the same time. There is just a level of multitasking that is required to do both things well, that just can't be achieved. Vince Laforet had a great blog post on this a few months back (and we all know that V is the goto resource when it comes to Aerials, and HD-DSLRs).

Thanks for sharing. |
