1D Front Focus Problems... It's Real...

->> Unfortunately, I've experienced what I've heard some users of the Canon 1D have reported... Using a loaner 1D at the World Series, I opened up my take in Photoshop only to find that all of the images captured using this loaner body (I used two different lenses, an 80-200 and a 300 2.8) were slightly front focused! The images were out just enough to make them crap. You can't "see" the problem while using a browser such as Photo Mechanic or FotoStation, you have to look at them in Photoshop at 100%.
Any other photogs or Canon Reps out there that can shed some light on this problem?
Thankfully, I've used own 1D for the majority of my assignment... It's sharp as a tack. The loaner is on its way back to Canon.. |

->> Rob Galbraith's web site ( www.robgalbraith.com ) has a couple of threads on this topic. I have not had the problem so I am not positive how it worked out.

->> I discovered that in some cases...especially with long glass it may be necessary for CPS to "fine tune" a specific lens and camera to work together. I did this with my 1D and my 400 2.8 and it has made a great difference.

->> Is this problem covered under Canon's warranty, or will it have to come out of our pockets? I notice this problem mostly when shooting with the 1D and a 400 2.8, even with non-moving subjects, and shooting with al-servo.

->> Thanks everyone so far for the feedback. Hopefully others will respond.. it's all pretty frustrating.
I know for sure after the Series I will inquire about the "fine tuning" process.. We shouldn't have to do any of this...
Hello, Canon??? Anyone reading these threads??? I'd love to hear from you.
Hey Mike.... how was your 1D and 400 2.8 performing "pre" fine tuning? You mentioned you had the lens/camera tuned... did Lake Success do this, or? I'm curious and interested in details... Thanks.. |

->> Hey,
This is interesting... I've never really paid that much attention to it, but now I will. My main camera is the 1D and 400 2.8... I think I'll call Canon in So CA. and see what they've got for info...
Very interesting indeed... |

->> I just spoke with Todd, one of the Canon reps and according to him, they have heard of the problem. But, it's not one that has been a consistant one just yet... So I guess that is good news.
I also asked him about "fine tuning" the 1D/400 combo and he said that they can do it. Also he said that it shouldn't affect the 1D when using other EF lenses...
He said that if I have a problem with it, (1D/400 combo) then I should send it to them and they'll check it out. The only thing I forgot to ask him was if it was covered under warranty.
Here's their tech support number for anyone who is interested: (800) 828-4040 and follow the prompts.
I don't know if this is only for the Irvine, CA. service center or for the whole country...
Ron, if you need Jess Bailey's number (Canon tech rep) in Irvine, give me a call. My cell is (415) 713-6919. |

->> Thanks for the info, Larry!
While checking the message boards at www.robgalbraith.com I found mention that the problem seemed to be related to using the autofocus function in AI-Servo, not so much while manual focusing. So.... last night I used autofocus sparingly and it seemed to help.
I don't know if I'll have the opportunity to run anything by Canon in Irvine or not, but I will give you a call if I can...
Thanks again!
