| ->> This post falls under the heading of "Well, Duh!!!" but if you're like me and don't always pay attention to the simple housekeeping chores of your computer, last night I defragged my C: drive (It took 9 hours). Last time I did it was oh, like, never. My Dell laptop is 18 mos. old. So, many of you will not be surprised to learn the performance of my computer went into Warp 9. I could not believe the difference. So, for what it's worth, for those of you like me who overlook this stuff, defrag! It works. |

What does defraging your hard drive have to do with what brand of computer you own??? |

| ->> Don't ignore a defrag on a Mac...while it may not be as necessary as defragging a Windows machine, it will restore some of the speed that you've lost. There are other 'housekeeping' chores that should be done to your Mac, as well. Example: Start your machine in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down after the chime) about once a week... |

Mac's use hard drives don't they? or are they running the operating system on flash drives like the Sony Vaio's. Verry fast the flash drives, yet still pricey. |

->> Louis, the brand isn't what makes the difference, it's the operating system. Macs OS 10 automatically defrags and has a different read/write system, not to mention disk format than PCs. If you're really interested, you can read all about it here.

As for restarting every week, that sounds like a memory issue with Aperture 3. I rarely ever even log out of my mac, let alone shut down. I've gone months without shutting down. I really only shut down when I have to run updates that require it. |

I use Diskeeper 2010 Professional.You can set up to automate all the defrag process and other maintenance items. http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home/diskeeper.aspx
Scott,
I don't have a Mac which is why I am asking. |

->> Yamil,
Give a quick read of the support document referenced above:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1375
specifically the part that reads:
"You probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X. Here's why"...
and list the reasons... |

->> "what's a C: drive?"
I've had Macs for a few years now and always re-name my internal drive "C Drive" for that once-a-year "Huh?" from a PC person that looks at my computer's desktop....
Priceless. |
