DVD burning issues

->> The DVD writer on my MacBook Pro is refusing to burn to DVDs via Toast from literally the same 100 disc box I have used previously. An internet check on the error codes suggested the writer was faulty so I took it for repair but the technician was able to burn DVDs of two different brands with no problem.
I have since tried two other brands and am still having the same problem. The three brands I have now used (Verbatim, Memorex and TDK) are those I have found recommended on Mac forums. I am unable to burn DVDs via the internal writer using Toast, the inbuilt Apple software and PhotoMechanic but am able to burn CDs on the internal writer. I am also able to burn DVDs using the various brands I have now purchased on an external burner. The internal writer will also read DVDs.
I could understand why the problem might occur if I had just updated my operating system but hadn't done any updates between burning sessions.
I'm aware that there can be incompatibility issues between some brands of DVD/CD and writers but I have never heard of it happening in this manner and because of the random brand selection am wondering if there is another cause than a faulty writer.
Does anybody have any ideas as to why the writer has become so selective in the brands it will burn to please ? |

->> Check to make sure you have the latest updates for your version of Toast and your current OS ...
It wouldn't be impossible to have s few bad blank DVD's ... when they pound them out by the millions ... it can happen .... |

Mark, reinstalling Toast is an option I have considered but I wanted to check for any other possibilities as apart from anything else I am not 100% certain where the disk is !
Butch, after the problem surfaced I upgraded the OS though have stalled on doing the same with Toast for the moment because the reviews of the relevant upgrade don't seem to be particularly favourable. As such I am wary in case it adds problems that mask the solution to the initial one. I've had bad DVDs in the past but not as many as from that one box, and in succession, or from three different manufacturers at once. My first thought watching the tech burning DVDs was actually that maybe I had the last of a good batch and the first of a bad batch in the same box.
Sam, I'll look into the cleaner you suggest though am sure the tech would have done that. I'll have to check with him.
Patrick, unfortunately the laptop is now around two years old.
I could just ask for the writer to be replaced and see if that fixes things but the repairers suspect a software issue because of how the problem is manifesting itself and would prefer to do a clean install of the OS to see if that solves the problem. It makes a lot of sense as I hunted for a specific preference for the burner and found loads of Apple OS files relating to it which I guess could have become corrupted. (and btw all, yes I have repaired disk permissions)
For me the problem is that, on top of cost for repairs to a laptop that will most likely be consigned to back up duty in about a years time, a clean install means it will then probably take another couple of days to reinstall all my software and other settings on top of the time the laptop is away. Even then there is no guarantee such action will resolve the problem and it is time I don't really have at the moment and, for something that whilst it still burns CDs isn't a necessity as I can use the desktop DVD writer for those occasions when I need to burn DVDs.
I guess my next stage is to find my copy of Toast. |

| ->> I've had the same problem, and plan to send it back to Apple for replacement of the drive. It started as an intermittent problem and now my drive won't read or write any DVDs. Apparently it's a hardware issue - search the Apple support forums and there are tons of posts about it. Glad I bought the Applecare warranty. |

->> Thanks David. Sorry to hear you are having the same problem.
I found several threads on the Apple forums referring to the same error codes but those people had found they just could not burn anything. I also found a few whose problems seemed to persist after replacing their writer so being an eternal optimist had hoped there may be another, harder to trace but easier to resolve, cause.
I think I'll reinstall Toast and update and if that doesn't work just keep running the writer for CDs until it fails completely. Luckily I use the writer because it is convenient not because I have to. |

->> Nigel,
I am still using Toast 7 ... when I upgraded to Snow Leopard I had problems with Toast ... can't remember the exact error code I got ... but I went to Roxio's site and downloaded the newest update for v7 from their support section for my version ... now Toast behaves very well ... :-)
Not implying it couldn't be a hardware or system issue ... just throwing it out there. |
