Canon Mark 4 question

->> Just got the Mark 4 about 2 weeks ago. The manual says when the EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM is used with an extender, use the center AF point only. The other AF points may cause a focusing error. What if I just use just the 70-200 or just my 300mm f2.8L USM (non IS)? Or my 300 with the extender? There's also my 85mm f1.8, 16-35 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8 which are all not IS. Anyone try it? Is there any difference in the focusing?
Any help would be great

| ->> does it give a reason for it? I have a mkIV and used it with my 300 2.8 + 1.4x with multiple points with no problems.. |

->> David,
Not sure if I'm reading the manual right. Hard to understand. I think it has to do weather it's automatic AF point selection or manual AF point selection. I always use manual AF point selection. Maybe its only when its on auto. I'll keep testing it out at games. Thanks for asking. It's page 97-99 in the manual in case you want to read it.
Thanks again

->> There won't be an issue with any of your lenses and non-central AF points. It's specific to the 70-200 non-IS when used with a teleconverter. It's saying in that specific situation you should select only the center AF point. This is a warning that (IIRC) goes back to the introduction of this lens back in around 1994 or so.
Note on page 99 the following:
The following lenses and lens combinations have a maximum aperture of
f/4, but cross-type focusing on 39 AF points is still possible as with lenses
having an f/2.8 maximum aperture.
EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM,
EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM + Extender EF1.4X II,
EF200mm f/2L IS USM + Extender EF2X II,
EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM + Extender EF1.4X II,
EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM + Extender EF1.4X II
The IS version is listed as working with the 1.4x TC with non-central points, so it is a possible issue limited to the non-IS version only. It's been a while since I used the non-IS lens, but I think you can still use the non-central points, just that perhaps AF performance may not be up to Canon's standard. The warning is also not specific to one teleconverter, so it could just be a general statement. With certainty, you'll see greater AF degradation with the 2x compared to the 1.4x. Test it. It will probably still work. |

->> Anyone know if this affects tracking performance when the
subject is off the central point? |

->> Gregory,
I doubt it does, at least from my experiences with mine. I have never been so comfortable using the farthest points from center while tracking. |

->> Ron,
Good explanation. It says the same thing in my Mark 2N manual about the 70-200 non IS. I knew it sounded familiar. Forgot all about it. I just tried using my 300 2.8 with the 1.4x at a lax game and it worked fine. I only had the mark 4 for about 2 weeks and so far I find the focusing similar to my mark 2N. The image quality though is outstanding. Just my 2 cents
Thanks

->> Marshall,
Great seeing you again today! After talking with you I experimented as well with my non IS 300, took my TC off and fooled around with the focus points and then put it back on and used the same variations of auto focus points
Did not see any difference either.

->> Jim,
Last couple of days I've been playing around with different lens and have had no problems either. Must just be me.
See ya
