High School Photo Contest

->> It's that time of year again... I'm judging a high school photo contest and am calling on the sportsshooter community to help pick a best of show.
I've created a gallery of all the first place winners and it's up to you guys to pick your favorite. And please feel free to comment on what you like/dislike about any of the images. Feedback really helps these students learn.
There were no categories or rules for the students. Just take pictures. Some were printed in a darkroom, others printed at Walgreens. That's why I gave so many first place awards.
email me or respond to this message with any comments.

->> #1
#12
I can't tell from the web image whether 12 is sharp. Could be my laptop or the scratched cornea that I got yesterday. If 12 is sharp then that would be my winner. It's one thing to pose a good shot, which the shooter of #1 certainly did but something else to recognize a great shot and frame it as such as something is unfolding in front of you. |

->> Another vote for number one. I really like 14 also but one edges it out. Very good use of BW. I don't think it would have nearly the impact it does in color. |

->> Matt,
I just want to say nice job to all of the students. I judge a few high school contests around here and would be totally pumped if this were the level of photographs that were entered. I see some great stuff, but most is far and few between. When I'm in a journalism/photography class taking pictures I always offer to come back and speak to the class and have never been taken up on the offer... Anyway, here are my pics:
#1 (is my #1) - photographer took light and shadows into consideration when composing photo for a striking image
Also like:
#5 - I like the symmetry and finding something interesting in the ugly and mundane
#10 - Something about this one really catches my eye. Maybe it's the motion. Or complete randomness of it. Nice job with silhouette and hints of light/color on the birds.
#13 - interesting layers combine with muted color palette make you pause on this picture for a while. I do wish I knew more about it.
#14 - Nice color and the soft focus works well here
#18 - funny, off center works well and I just like cats :-)
#20 (this would be my #2)- Great color and nice moment. All of the little details work so well together. Backyard, hose, bathing suit, wet hair... This picture speaks to summertime very well. Looks most like a picture I would take (for whatever that's worth!) |

->> #9, #8 and #10 in that order.
They seem to have solid subjects, well composed and in focus, maybe not glitzy but honest photos.
Most all others are out of focus slightly or motion blurred when it doesn't help the image, #10 being an exception.
#1 is appealing to most males due to its sexuality, but even it is slightly soft. The dog in #8 has more emotion. |
