Rubber Hoods for NBA Playoffs this season

->> Last night I received an email giving me a heads-up that at this year's NBA playoffs they are going to be more strictly enforcing the rubber lens hood rule. Apparently they're going to be especially enforcing this on remotes, but I'm told that this also applies to handheld lenses. While the email didn't come directly from the NBA, it did come from an editor that I work with who is always on-the-ball, and was based on a conversation he had last night with someone within the NBA.
I'm certainly not complaining; I'm all for anything that keeps the court-side a little safer.
Anyway, if I were home I'd be able to dig through my 'box-o-randomness' that I keep in the garage that would surely produce an assortment of spiders and cheap rubber hoods in all sizes, but I'm on assignment out of town and there doesn't appear to be a real camera store open on Sundays around here.
I do have a rubber pipe fitting hood for my 300mm f/2.8 with me, but does a similar thing exist for my 70-200mm f/2.8 or my wider zooms that I can pick up at Lowes, Home Depot or a Marine Supply Store or anyplace likely to be open today? It may be time to go "Macgyver". |

| ->> If you aren't too worried about function - you should be able to be buy a 6x6 sheet of rubber from either for about $4. Cut in 1/2, wrap and attach with a rubber band. |

->> Brian-
I actually used a roll of rubber weatherstripping designed for the bottom of garage doors to cover all my Hasselblad hoods at one point years ago. You could wrap this stuff around your regular hoods and be fine I think.

| ->> I wonder if this means the rubber hoods are required, or that they are required in lieu of the regular hoods? In other words, if you're not using any hood at all, do you still need to add rubber hoods to your lenses? |

| ->> Thanks Mark and Robert... I think I'll stop now and buy some of that stripping you mentioned Robert and just keep it in the car. |

->> At Lakers - OK City Game 1 today...some had rubber lens hoods (mostly veterans of the NBA Playoff wars)...many did not.
In my limited experience...enforcement is inconsistent and sometimes dependent on the building and team.
Some teams insist on rubber lens hoods during the regular season. Some say they do but don't check.
(Warriors had a wierd rule a few years back that did not allow certain camping/floor seats we sat in on the baseline ...pr guy at the time told me it was "A Nellie Rule" ---refering to head coach Don Nelson.)
At The Finals though, the NBA makes more noise about the rubber lens hood rule.
(Personally I prefer the nice Mamiya RB/RZ rubber lens shades. I bought several at the used counter at Samy's and at Roberts for 5 bucks each.) |

->> Ditto on the Mamiya RB/RZ 67!
In fact I use one on my 70-200 24/7/365! |

->> I don't shoot NBA, but I carry two Mamiya RB/RZ 77mm Lens Hood with me at all times, I use them all the time on my 70-200.
I like them better than the factory hard one.

->> Well, last night at the Orlando Magic game we were told that they were using the first playoff game of the first round (this game) as an opportunity to advise all shooters that if they plan on shooting form the court then they WILL bring a rubber hood to all subsequent games and that it will be enforced. I think at least (no kidding) 4 different officials made it a point to come to the court and tell us all that. (They weren't being rude about it... they were more just making sure we knew so we don't end up in a jam.)
They said this was league-wide and that this playoff season if you don't have a rubber hood, you're shooting from an overhead position.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. |

->> So, to my question up thread - are rubber hoods being required even when you're not using a hood?
I frequently don't use a hood when courtside in order to not block the sight lines of shooters next to me. |

| ->> Yes, my understanding is that if you're shooting on the court you need a rubber hood. You can't go hoodless and you can't use the plastic one. |

| ->> Robert, you may have had your rubber lens hood on but you were obviously blocking the view. |

->> According to the NBA policy, you must have a rubber lens hood on all of the glass you are shooting with, including remotes.
This is considered a safety issue, so going "hoodless" is not a solution.
As noted, enforcement during the playoffs increases, but could be inconsistent.
Long lenses (300, 400, 200-400) have been sort of exempt. But you do occasionally see a conscientious photographer using the (goofy-looking and heavy) rubber sewer pipe reducer thingy as a lens hood for long glass (it's held in place by a big hose clamp). Roberts Distributors used to sell them. I am not sure they still do, but contact Jody to find out.
If you want to spend the money, the AquaTech soft lens hoods would certainly do the trick. |
