| ->> Anyone know how high the hole is in the glass that allows you to shoot through for hockey? I saw people with stacked milk crates, adjustable stools, wooden stools, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. it was uncomfortable shooting bent over the last time I was at the rink. |

| ->> It is different in every rink, both in placement on the glass in relation to the dashers and in relation to your feet (since not all rink floors are even with the ice). Just have an assortment of height adjusters in your car. |

| ->> I don't think that there is any standard height. Some rinks have a raised platform around the boards while others have you standing on the same concrete floor that the slab is frozen on. |

->> Alan,
The heights vary to some extent and all depends on how heigh the stands or surface on our side is compared to the ice surface. I am not sure what dictates the hole location but it seems to be a distance from the top of the boards... this has no corealtion to the surface on the non ice side.
I have found the 12" high EZ-Foldz folding stool to be perfect for the Boston Garden as well as the rink they put in at fenway.

| ->> I'd measure the height of a Versus camera pointer while seated in a ratty office chair with a shouldered camera, plus the height of whatever riser to the concrete deck below. Add about 6" for the lens and you wind up with a round number. |

->> Jim,
But it all depends on which hole at the garden or the official NHL gimmick rink not to mention that 12 inch high stool might be right for your height, but not for someone several inches shorter or taller.
There is no magical answer. |

| ->> I guess the best bet is to grab an adjustable stool. I saw someone with it and based on what everyone has said, that would be my safe bet. Thanks for all the info. |

->> Melissa,
You are correct... that is why I said "I have found..." This actually works for me at all holes at The garden, need to make some adjustments in the way I sit/lean but sure beats kneeling.
Dave has the right formula and one that I could have used in some of my engineering classes NO right answer that applies to all.
You need to take this on as a case by case basis and be flexible.

->> As far as NHL goes, they actually have a guide as to how high above the dasher the holes should be cut, but as stated by many, your actual shooting height may vary.
At some arenas your feet are on the same level as the ice, on others you may be elevated a bit.
I know at Verizon Center for the Capitals a couple of the holes you need a medium-height wooden stool to be fairly comfortable while the ones that are at the end of aisles where the fans sit you need a very low stool, the kind you may have at your laundry room at home to reach a higher shelf -- just the single-step kind like the folding ones many photogs carry (also called a Turtle stool from the original maker)
The best solution I saw was a drummer's stool. These can be finely adjusted to many heights and are padded and swivel. But they are expensive. |

| ->> Thanks for posting this thread. I covered a whole season at a new hockey arena (ECHL) and one corner was ok by knees and the other was near the zamboni enterance - was not good for folks of average height because it required stooping. I didn't even think of getting an adjustable stool until now..that would have made life so much easier. When next season comes around, that's definately on my to-get list. |
