->> My paper finally upgraded our gear. Today (4.14.10) was my first day using a brand-new D700. We have the power booster but for some reason, I am not able to reach the promised 8fps. Any tips out there on how to achieve this goal?

->> Are you using a Nikon ENEL4 battery? I believe you have to use this battery and not the little grey ones or the AAs, but I could be wrong...
Try the Q&A if you still can't figure it out... |

->> In addition to the EN-ELa battery you will need its charger and the BL-3 battery chamber cover. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=nikon+en-el4a&N=0&InitialSearch=yes
Those three items combined will give you the extra two frames a second although I believe the D700 shoots at five fps so meaning 7 frames at best. And don't confuse an old D2H battery to do the same which in size is different, but also the amp's are a lot lower even if it did fit. |

->> Joel, if you are using the proper battery in the grip, there is also probably a setting in the menu which you need to change to tell the camera to get power from the grip. I know that needs to be done with the D300.
Andrew, I use batteries from my D2h in my D3 and MB10 grip all of the time and have not noticed any difference. |

->> Very helpful advice, Chuck.
Joel, if you have the battery pack that holds eight AA batteries, you can achieve eight frames a second. It ships with the MB-D10 grip. Or you can go the other direction and get the proper adaptations to use the EN=EL4 battery. |

| ->> Assuming you're using the correct battery, you may also need to adjust some of the custom settings. There is a setting in the AF system that will slow down the frame rate in favor of more accurate focusing. |

->> Bob,
I've used a D300 with MB-10 as well and the D2H battery is too big to fit inside the MB-10 (I believe its a 1,900). Are you sure its not a different battery than the one that came with the D2H? |

| ->> It's the same battery. The only thing you need to do is switch the end caps. Those are different. |

->> Thanks for the help. Guess my boss overlooked that little detail when he ordered our new gear. But since we were still using D1H's or our own gear it is just awesome that my company (Media News Group) signed off on getting us new equipment. Guess I will just use double A's when I need the extra speed for sports. I do have the EN-EL4 for my D2H, so if I find $80 somewhere I might buy the end caps.
Thanks again,
Joel |

->> I just recently found out about the battery myself. Put my D2H battery in and works like a charm. The frame rate has to be set to the highest setting and then it has to be set on CH on the dial on top of the camera and to the left. Push the info button and you will see if you are getting the desired frame rate.
If by "end caps" you are talking about the battery door adapter you can certainly buy them for less than $80. I've found them for under $50. |

->> With the D700 and D300 you can write 14 bit RAW files or 12 bit RAW files. They will cycle fastest writing the 12 bit files and slower for the 14 bit files.
I strongly suggest only shooting RAW files, but if the end usage is only newsprint reproduction or web posting, then 12 bit RAW is plenty good enough.
The En-EL4 and En-EL4a are identical in shape, and only differ in capacity. Either will power the D700 (or D3 or D300 and variants) to their fastest cycling rates, but the smaller capacity En-EL4 will do so for fewer frames.
For me one of the real assets of the D700 is that it does so well with only the En-EL3e battery forgoing the bulkier battery adapter needed for the alternate battery configurations. I also have a D3 so if I must have fastest cycling rates I reach for it rather than the D700. |

| ->> In a pinch, you can use the En-EL4 without the BL-3 end cap. The battery sits in there pretty well. A couple of strips of gaffers tape will ensure it stays. Make sure and keep an En-EL3e in the body, just in case the EL4 comes loose, you don't completely lose power to the camera. |

->> one photographer on our staff "dremeled" off the AA battery holder to just the right size to hold the ENEL4 in place ... seems to work pretty well until he can get a BL3.
cannot beat the ENEL4 for the improved performance, that's for sure. |
