Anyone else's MBP always drop wireless connection?

->> Mine is terrible about it. It is about 1.5 years old. It didn't have this problem before, it has just gradually gotten worse and worse. I have to reboot everytime it drops in order to pick it up again only to have it drop within minutes later. I found a thread over 50 pages long on Apple's support site and found no definitive answers.
I know many photogs use MBP's, so if any of you have had this problem, how did you resolve it? |

->> I have not had this problem, but my wife had it with her MBP. It turned out that her airport card had a lot of chalk dust in it and needed to be cleaned. If you can blow some condensed air in there try that. If it doesn't help, go by an Apple "genius" to have them test it.

->> I hope you have AppleCare. You were right to look at the Apple Support Forums, too. Is it always on one network or do you have the problem on a variety of networks?
My wife, who uses a PC and I had problems in our home network, where we changed routers etc only to discover the problem was with our IP (Comcast).
I think we need more info, like, what other things you have done to find the problem, to isolate the problem to the MBP. |

| ->> My wife's MacBook Pro drops the signal a bit or she has to get close to the router to keep it. However, I think it has more to do with dropping it a dozen times on our tile floor rather than an Apple problem. |

->> My MBP sometimes cannot find my wifi in my house after its been asleep, often requiring me to reload the password...met with "Connection Timed Out" and then restarting my MBP.
Happens with the other 13" MB in my house as well. |

->> I am not a Mac expert, but when I feel I have run out of options when troubleshooting my Mac I run Repair Disk Permissions (App.-Utilities-Disk Utility). You never know, the driver for the airport card might be sitting on a part of the hard drive that might have been corrupted.
Btw, does the problem occur when connecting on any router you are connecting to? |

| ->> Does this happen only with your router? I had a lot of drops with my Netgear, but once I switched to the Airport Extreme I stopped having problems. |

->> I first developed that problem myself on my old MBP after the Snow Leopard update. I couldn't stay connected to wifi, or it would just slow to a crawl. It eventually sort of worked itself out, but when waking from sleep, it's frequent issue. I usually have to power down the router and/or AirPort to get them to work again.
Another issue I've been having lately? Since the most recent OS update (to 10.6.3) I've been having major issues with my trackpad becoming unresponsive and the keyboard letters sticking. Anybody else with that one? |

| ->> Try updating the router software. I had the same problems when I first switched over to a Mac, but haven't in the last two years. |

| ->> It doesn't matter where I am. It will drop any wireless connection anywhere. Also, it doesn't have anything to do with the OS. It came with Tiger and worked fine for quite some time, it then started to drop the connection and gradually got worse. When Snow leopard came out, I formatted the HD and installed the new OS and it still dropped the connection. I've tried many of the suggestion over on the apple support forums, but none have worked yet. I was hoping someone here knew of something else to try before I took it in to see if Apple could repair it. I'm afraid, they will tell me that the airport is built onto the mother board so I will need to replace the MB. For what I paid for this thing, I would really be upset to have to replace the MB after only 1.5 years. I will try the canned air suggestion for sure. |

->> I sure would be curious as to what is causing the problem.
My 2 year old MBP is rock solid and picks up the wifi within seconds of opening the lid. It’s never missed a beat.
I assume you’ve done all the OS updates it requests over the years? |

->> If you want to look into what it would take to replace the airport card before you take it to apple, try this site http://www.pbparts.com/.
I've been able to repair my Macs myself; however, I'm not currently using a MBP. It is interesting that the iPads are having a "losing wifi connection" problem, too. Apple came out with a solution for that problem other than "move closer to the router." Apple said it was a password problem. |

->> Russ,
Don't waste the time reading and trying the various fixes that people suggest online. None of them work and its co-incidence if they did for other. I tried them all before and none worked.
This is a known issue to Apple of some older MPB. I purchased mine second hand and had this problem instantly. They Mac came with Apple Care so I took it to the store to see a Genius and it displayed the same issues for them so they booked it in and replaced the Airport Express Card.
Ever since then its been problem free. If you don't have Apple Care then the receipt said the fix would have cost £90 here in the UK so about $50 in your money.

| ->> That is what I was thinking David. I'm in a pretty small town and we don't have an apple store. So, I just took it to a small computer store that sells and repairs apple. I'd be very please if it only cost $50 for a new airport card. |

->> I have constant problems with losing connections too. Mine is a new MBP bought in Dec.
The guy at the local computer store said it is probably the router. I have crappy, slow DSL (ATT) and the router is a 2Wire. My last one quit in Sept. and I bought a new one, another 2Wire. He suggested getting another one (anything BUT 2wire.)
It just keeps getting worse and I need to find a solution. Some sites are worse than others. I rarely, if ever, lose connection when I'm here on SS but lots when on facebook.
This is driving me nuts. |

| ->> Oh, and the Einsteins at ATT (you know the ones with such a thick accent that you can't understand them) said it was probably because there is a fax machine in the room. And to move everything to another location. Huh? |

->> I am happy to report it is NOT a problem with my MBP. Big sigh of relief.
Number one, I got rid of the slow ATT/DSL and signed up with the local cable company for cable internet. Huge difference.
Number two, since I had to get a new wireless router, I went with the Linksys Wireless E2000.
Problem solved. Happy hamster doin' the happy dance. |

Call Steve, maybe he will give away a rubber case for it? (or tell you not to hold it like that) |

->> My desktop started dropping the AirPort connection just today. I opened it up and re-seated the AirPort card and all of the RAM and blew the dust out of the interior. So far (crossing fingers,) it seems to have done the trick.

->> My iPhone 4 doesn't seem to drop its connection, but the iMac on my desk, situated 15 feet from the Airport Express ... that acts as a repeater for the Airport Extreme that is 50 feet away seems to drop its connection constantly.
The multiple MacBooks in my house have no problems ... although the Airport Express seems to cut out entirely when my neighbour turns their wifi on (yes they turn it on and off a few times a day for some unexplainable reason). |
