->> Are there any programs or methods of file recovery out there that allows you to recover files after you have used the card again?

->> I've found Photo Rescue (http://www.datarescue.com/) to be the best. There is a manual at :

http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/support.htm

I would suggest you try to retrieve the images using a trial version though would recommend you getting a copy anyhow as at sometime it could save you losing a client.

I also seem to recall a thread a while back giving details of other software plus somebody kindly explaining how each works.

From what I understand formatting makes retrieval more difficult but am sure I am not alone in finding that it is the images from months ago that are easiest to retrieve and the ones I am looking for that take more work to find.

Or maybe that's just because this kind of problem always happens when I'm on deadline.

Seriously, and I am not an IT whizz so hopefully somebody else will chime in with a better explanation, but I am guessing it depends to a degree on whether you have written over that part of the card.

Good luck with retrieving the images.

->> Nigel,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I did write over the cards, so I'm not sure if recovery is possible. It is video too, so i'm not having any luck with random images from months ago popping back up. (that has happened in the past) I have photo rescue, but it hasn't recovered anything at all except what is currently written to the card.

->> Kohl,

If all you see are what is on the card then everything from the past has been written over already.

When you reformat a card all you are doing is resetting the directory structure, the card basically forgets where everything is stored and starts writing where it wants. But the old data is still there and as long as it is not overwritten you can recover.

Usually, though, you don't overwrite everything on the card but if you fill the card then all the old data is gone for good.

->> George,

Thanks a bunch. I guess im out of luck. I had a few solid days of shooting and dumping cards, so i didn't realize it wasn't there until after i shot on the card again. I guess i was just hoping for some miracle software someone knew about that would dig a little deeper. But, of course, that doesn't exist. Thanks for the info!

->> I'd run the recovery anyway. There is a chance that it may find a few and at this point the only thing you have to lose is a little time.

Start it some night before you retire and check it the next morning. Be prepared to sift through a lot of images.
