Recommended Compact Flash for Canon 1D Mark II

->> Reading all the reviews abut compact flash cards can be confusing. I am looking to buy what would be the fastest compact flash cards for the 1D Mark II.

It seems like looking at the Rob Galbraith database the San Disk Extreme IV would be the fastest for the Mark II, but I don't know if the newer flash cards coming out Extreme or Extreme Pro will be any faster on the camera, or because its an older camera is there a limit on how fast the camera can process images?

Any help on this subject greatly appreciated!

->> The 1D mk2 is not a UDMA compatible camera, so you won't see performance increase in camera-to-card write speeds with The extreme IV's or the new Extreme's or Extreme Pro's. If you can find the Extreme IV's around (they've been discontinued) they would be a good choice because they show up as the fastest cards for the camera, and are quick in a FW800 reader as well.

->> thanks for the replies! Doing a quick search on the cards, it looks like a Extreme III or Extreme IV is selling about the same price as the new San Disk Extreme CF cards.

Would it be a better to buy the new one's or to get the older ones that are non-UDMA?

If there's not much difference in price, go for speed (ie. the newest cards)...and don't skip the Sandisk Firewire Extreme reader either, the FW800 download speed is amazing!

I know you asked about CF cards but have you considered SD. The Sandisk Ultra II 2Gb cards are about 1/2 to 1 Mb/Sec faster than the fastest CF cards. I use them as I can empty the buffer six seconds faster than a Sandisk Extreme III CD shooting raw. There is an SD table below the CF on on Galbraith.

The down side is they are small and fragile. I have had one mechanically fall apart on me in a point and shoot camera. The other downside is I don't know if there is a firewire reader for them. I haved used USB 2.0 readers and they are all pretty slow.

The Sandisk Ultra II's can be found pretty inexpensively these days.
