My Nikon D700 Saved My Life!

->> I had a scary experience in shooting prep baseball yesterday when I got beaned, just behind 1st base, square on by an errant throw from left field in between innings. Unfortunately my Nikon D700 took the brunt of the hit and instead of reading Nikon, my camera now says "n". And my on-board flash is totally smashed. Fortunately I am okay (and my 400 2.8 as well!) and through it all my camera works fine!
Here are some images of the damage:

Does anyone know if the top half of the magnesium body is replaceable as it took most of the hit and is cracked in the on-board flash well. It looks like an expensive repair! However, it works fine other than the pop-up flash so I may just resort to gaffers tape. I would appreciate any info before I send it to Nikon. |

->> First of all, I'm glad you are OK!!
Replacing this part is better than getting a cracked Skull or worse!!
Send it in to NPS, they will tell you how much to repair it. It might be worth it!!
Did you have insurance?? |

->> It should be an easy repair. Not necessarily cheap but from the photos you only lost parts of the casing. You say that your 400 is ok.... If the 400 was mounted to the body and was being supported by a monopod, the force of the ball was transmitted to the lens mount. There is a good chance that the mount geometry is going to be off on the body too.
You can always ask for an estimate. |

| ->> Looks worse than my D3!! I have insurance but it doesn't pay for repairs...just theft. Ship it asap to NIKON in El Segundo with the form from the Nikon website. They'll get back to you with an estimate in a day or two. If you were closer, you could drive it. |

->> Hey ... they make new cameras everyday ... but new noggins on the other hand are hard to come by ... I say we award your D700 The Medal of Valor. Send it in and get an estimate and go on from there.
Glad to hear you're ok ... could have happened to any of us .... |

->> Mr. Liddy, I always enjoy your point of view but I have to admit this one takes the cake. Dang Nikons. That is why I like Canon better. I will be keeping a close eye on the company issued D3 to make sure it behaves itself.
And to Larry, glad you are okay. Baseballs can do some serious damage. |

->> Funny, in a completely coincidental and unfortunate way, my MkIII and 70-200 2.8 bounced off the ground from around 5 feet up on Wednesday...right onto the hot shoe. I didn't know magnesium could crack from such a small drop...both pieces are now with Canon in Toronto.

best of luck with the d700 |

->> Tim -
The pro series gets cracked with a fall from five feet...and this guy's Rebel detaches from a helmet mount during a free fall and survives....whodathunkit.

->> I feel your pain, my first day out with NCAA baseball this year my 400 2.8 took a line drive foul direct hit. Shattered the lens hood but luckily the glass is ok.
I've already had several other near misses this year as well, I'm starting to feel nervous and shaky like a 10th yr bomb squad vet every time I head to a photo well these days. |

| ->> I feel your pain to Larry. Last year shooting a Phillies game, I was in the third base photo well and I had a foul ball one hop off the ground and buzz the hair on the top of my head. I can say that is the only disadvantage of being 6'5" tall, when I am in the photo well my head sticks about 4" over the top of the protective screen. Though a friend of mine who was in the stands watching the game on the third base side, got a good laugh out of it LOL. |

->> Wow, that could have been so much worse Larry!
I had my first ever contact with a foul last week. Had one smash right into the side of my 300's lens hood, which I had in reflex put in front of my face. Luckily only had a little paint wear as a result. |

->> Just an update on my D700:
Since being almost scalped by a baseball, I shot several more baseball games, senior prom, a bike criterium race, and a powder puff football game with my D700 and it seems to work just fine! I may go the gaffer tape route and instead buy a SU-800 to take the place of the on-board flash in commander mode. I'll eventually get it repaired, but with the kind of images it renders, its hard to part with it. I can go to my D300 when it does go in for repairs.
Patrick - I sure am!
Thanks to all for your comments! |
