->> I am looking for some input from people using the Combination of the Nikon 200-400 f/4 lens with the Nikon 1.4 converter. How do you like the combination of the two? Or don't like.
I am looking to purchase the 1.4. I was thinking of getting the 1.7, but according to Nikons web site you loose the auto focus function with the 1.7 on the 200-400. |

| ->> It's pretty good. Not as good as the lens bare, but pretty good. I know Bert loves it and he may chime in. 5.6 isn't really an issue anymore in daylight even under cloudy skies. ISO at 4000? No biggie... Nikon can handle, but I will still maintain that any TC in any camp performs better on a prime than on a zoom. |

| ->> It felt fairly slow on the AF with the 1.4 on it when I used the combination. That was indoors, at ISO3200-5000 on the D3 though. Its a notch slower than the primes as it is, and the TC just seemed to have made it a bit sluggish. |

->> I just used that combo on my D3 just this past weekend shooting Nascar.
I think it works fine, but of course bokeh is reduced. When I use that combo I am always thinking in the back of my mind that I wish I had a 400 f2.8 with that same tc for that one moment. But I don't have the cashola nor the desire to haul a heavy 400 f2.8 in all the places I've taken my 200-400 over the years.
Personally it's a combo that I use sparingly when I absolutely need the extra reach and when there isn't enough light for my 1.5 crop bodies (or I don't have one of those bodies with me). |

| ->> use it almost every single day. great combination even in very low light with the d3 or d3s, not so hot with the d2X unless bright daylight |

| ->> I shot a month of Spring Training with the 200-400 and the 1.4tc on both my D3 and a D300s and loved it. My 400 2.8 stayed in its case the whole time, I didn't think about using it at all. |

| ->> Thanks everyone for all the input. I just ordered my 200mm-400mm yesterday. As much as I would like to have the 400 f/2.8 I couldn't swing the extra 3K at this time. From everything I have read and the comments here, I think the 1.4 and the 200-400 will suit my needs just fine with use on my D3s. |

| ->> I too have been thinking of this combo, but in doing some research on the Nikkor 200-400 I found a few comments that the long end of the lens is soft. None of you have commented on this, but have you experienced it with the TC or without it? |

->> According to the Nikon Rumors site, the 200-400 is due to be replaced in a few weeks.

->> I have used the 200-400 / TC-1.7 combo at a lot of sports from figure skating to gymnastics to swimming to baseball to football...all with excellent results.
The current model is several years old ... I cannot imagine with an updated version would be like. |
