Spokeo - breach of privacy

->> So there's a site called Spokeo (http://www.spokeo.com/).
It's an advanced phonebook with far too much personal info: pictures, credit score, profession, age, address, house value, how rich you are, how many people live in your house, etc., etc.
Remove yourself by going to Privacy (bottom of the page) and entering your page URL on there.
Not very cool in my opinion.

->> I just looked at mine. The majority of the information they had on me was incorrect, but there was enough that was correct to make me uncomfortable. So I removed the listing. (I hope)
Thanks for the heads up. |

->> Wow that's some old information -- my hometown, which I've not lived in for years, plus a really old PO Box.
My favorite is the "Lifestyle & Interests" section, which was only about half right. I do "love reading," and who doesn't enjoy "family activities," but I saw nothing in there about smoking crack and loving it, or racing miniature donkeys for sport.
Not very cool indeed.

->> Two things,
First the glaring errors: I like cats?, I have no furnace?
Second, this is the stuff that any credit reporting agency would have access to. Remember that you are indeed eligible to a free, annual, look at your personal data, and you are entitled to report and correct errors. |

Uncanny how much they know about us. |

->> Not only was I married, apparently I also had children, that's news to me. Way too much incorrect info for my taste, so I had it removed, and they did so quickly.
from the privacy page;
"Spokeo aggregates publicly available information from phone books, social networks, marketing surveys, real estate listings, business websites, and other public sources. Spokeo does not originate data or publish user-generated content like Facebook or MySpace. Rather, Spokeo indexes third-party data in ways similar to Google or Bing. Spokeo does not control or maintain any aggregated third-party data, and therefore cannot guarantee its accuracy or currentness. Spokeo does not publish any information for children under 18. Please read our full privacy policy."
There is also a banner for a company "ReputationDefender" which they seem to be promoting. The free form to remove the listing is just below that. |

->> You know, I was going to use the privacy option and "opt-out", but I didn't like the idea that they need to get a valid email address to do it. Uh yeah, we only need it to verify you want off our lists. Wink wink, nod nod. Yeah, thats it. just to verify.
The categories they place me in, and other data sort of felt like a daily horoscope...very generic and essentially meaningless. You will meet someone nice today. You will wake up either happy or sad...blah blah blah
Time to dust off the old stand-by junk collection email. :) |

| ->> PJ, I am still in the process of making sure the images were not licensed to the person. It seems to have come off my images held with ZUMA. If they did not license them to this person, ... well I need to cross that bridge when I get there. It makes it more difficult to follow a proper procedure being this side of the world, and not currently in the US. |

->> Wally (and others):
I contact pipl.com about the images that were posted there (and also about taking down personal info).
Here's the response (they didn't address the question of taking down personal info):
Pipl is a search engine, we do not own the content we find, we simply show a preview of the data or a thumbnail image in our results and link to the original page so that our users can consume the content from its original provider.
Presenting relevant results in a search engine this way is clearly not a copyright violation, in the same way that a similar search results page on Google http://images.google.com/images?q=%22Pj%20Heller%22 does not violate your copyright.

Gave me a good laugh. |
