Ambient Sounds - Mic Suggestions
Steven Ickes, Photographer

->> I've been tasked with producing some slide shows for the 2010 football season. In addition to stills, I will need to record ambient sounds from the game so I thought I'd better start researching sound recording and equipment.

I know that parabolic dishes are the norm along the sidelines but was wondering if there might be better recommendations for recording ambient sound.

In general I'm looking at a simple and lightweight setup, probably a mic setup plugged directly into a small digital recorder of some kind.

Thanks.

->> Parabolics are used to get sound from huddles and the QB during the snap. They are highly directional. If you are looking to get audio of the players then that is your only choice. If you want sound of the stadium or other ambient sounds then a parabolic is the opposite of what you are looking for. That is where you want a good stereo mic.

->> If you're going to be carrying the audio equipment along with your still gear, consider a small recorder with a built-in stereo mic, like the Zoom H4 or H2. If you're not planning on plugging in an XLR cable, the H2 is a great choice. Relatively inexpensive in small enough to fit in a pocket, and the controls are fairly intuitive. I've used the H2 and H4 for everything from interviews to live concerts.

Whatever equipment you choose, if you're going to outdoors, get a good windscreen for your mic. Foam works ok, but you'll be best served by one of the hairy looking "dead cat" style wind screens. Nothing ruins natural sound like wind blowing across the mic.
