->> WSJ's Walter Mossberg wrote a front page article for the technology section today. He called it darn near perfect.
My prediction: Amazon's Kindle is about to get a lesson. And it's going to be a VERY painful lesson. I saw a TV ad for Kindle last night and had to laugh it was so poorly done. Reminded me of the cellphone industry just before iPhone launched. They had no idea what was about to happen. I think it's going to be the same with iPad. I am particularly interested in Newspaper apps for this thing. Do you buy the app and then get it for free after that?
BTW, Walter mentioned the newspaper option. A new day is about to start. |

I'll probably end up getting one, though I think I'll wait for the cellular version. |

| ->> I got my first ipod touch in December, so I'm in no hurry to buy something that's just a bigger version of that. But I could see buying a tablet like this. I plan on waiting at least til the end of the year tho to see all the other tablets that come out, and I'll let all the early adopters find the kinks for Apple to work out before considering it. |

->> I'm waiting for the cellular model as well.
As a photojournalist, here's benefits that I see:
I don't have sat-nav in my car, but I'll be able to use the iPad for that.
I have a jumble of different notebooks, and I'll be able to have everything in one place.
I'll love the calendar app for my assignment schedule. I currently keep my schedule in a notebook, and it's a system that has worked well for me, but it will be nice to not have to start a new book every three months or so, and I'll be able to search it.
I'll be able to use it as a portfolio book. I primarily shoot food, and chefs like seeing other things I've done, so I usually have to show them a promo book, and giving those away gets incredibly expensive. With this, I'll be able to show them a slideshow.
***I know that everything I just wrote can be done on an iPhone, but I hate typing on my wife's iPhone...I want the bigger screen, and for showing off photos, you can't beat the bigger screen***
I've migrated most of my photo workflow to my desktop, and I now only use my laptop for the web and email. But my laptop's battery is completely toast (the computer immediately shuts down when it's unplugged), and I can take the $130 that a battery costs and put it towards the iPad. Since I just need a machine for the web, the iPad will handle the duty just fine.
The thing that intrigues me for the iPad is the camera connection kit....it comes with a USB converter plug. So I'm hoping that somebody will write an app that lets you tether to the iPad. |

Have any others had experience with presenting portfolios on ipods or iPhones?
Amazon will be fine they have a kindle app for the ipad. |

->> I ordered mine last month and it will be delivered to my door on Saturday a.m. - no lines for me. I would never wait in a long line to buy anything.
I'm going to test the wifi version with the idea that I will get the 3G version if I like it. If not, I haven't spent a bunch of money by buying the wifi version.
I'm looking at it as purely a nice way to show my portfolio and on a personal side to read newspapers. I don't read many papers now but would like to read papers from other areas and I'm hoping this will work well for that. |

->> I pre-ordered mine at the local Apple store and will show up Saturday morning to pick it up.
I'll use it for my portfolio, reading, email, movies, and cool apps. And even though I don't have a need to create presentations, I might have to find a reason after watching the Apple video on the Keynote app. Man that thing is slick. |

I was thinking my next upgrade would be to a whichever new iPhone comes out this year, but perhaps an iPad would be a better decision. |

->> Something interesting... last night's episode of the "Modern Family" sitcom on ABC pretty much centered around one of the charecters getting an iPad for his birthday. Nice job of Apple getting Modern Family/ABC to get its new product involved in the show the same week its supposed to debut.
By the way, in case you didn't see the show, the charecter blew out his virtual birthday candles that could be seen on the iPad's screen. |

->> I'll get an Ipad when it replaces my need for a laptop to transmit. In other words, if photobits made a photomechanic for it, I'd be in heaven. Even if Adobe made a something like a photoshop lite for it, it would be great.
I heard they were going to make an sd card reader for the Ipad, but hopefully they'll make a cf card reader as well.
If that all happens, it'll essentially reduce my need to lug a macbook everywhere I go to almost nil. |

| ->> That's not entirely accurate, Jeff. There are two plans through AT&T for the iPad. Neither require a contract and can be enabled and disabled directly through the iPad. The costs are $14.99 for up to 250 MB of data per month and $29.99 for unlimited data. |

->> I had my iPad delivered to my front door today at 8:30. No line - I would never stand in line to buy some piece of hardware. One of our local Best Buys still had about 60 units today around noon, so I'm guessing it depends on the location as to what is available.
I was never under the impression that it would replace my laptop, but it does several things I like. The main reason I purchased it was for a light, portable, way to show my portfolio or previews. It allows me to get on the internet, email and a few usable apps with a lot less weight and no need to plug it in with an approximate 8 hour battery life.
It is what it is, it's not a notebook killer - yet. It is teh first reall entry in the the pad market. It has already spurred development by others and I think a year from now we will have some great pads out there with a lot more features than the iPad.
I'm still bugged that Apple refuses to implement Flash, but that's a whole other topic. |

->> Dave,
So how do you like it? I was waiting for the 3G unit to hit the stores, but I went over to Verizon today to get a much needed update on my BB Storm and I ended up replacing my Air Card with a MiFi 2200. I'm connected right now with my MacBook Pro and I also was able to connect my daughter's Ipod Touch, so I may just get the regular WiFi instead of the 3G. |

->> Mark, it is very snappy. I'm not an apple guy and I'm really liking it. Its NOT a laptop replacement but for what it does, it does it very well. The screen is nice quality, easy interaction and for my purposes it works really well. Photos really pop and it beats showing a client photos from my iPhone. My plan was to try the wifi version and if I like it to upgrade to the 3G version later and pass on the wifi to my wife. I'm not sure if I will do that or get the MiFi and keep the wifi version. I have 3G connected to my laptop and if I really need that connection I will use the laptop. I'm off to Best Buy tomorrow to see what the accessories look like.
There is nothing at this point that would lead me to tell you not to buy. If you're interested buy it and if you don't like it I'm sure you can sell on eBay and get your money back or a little more. |

I was buying it for that exact reason. Showing clients images without having to lug my laptop with me. Sometimes I hate being in the store and my laptop is still in the car. I may go get it tomorrow if they still have one in 1 of the 4 Apple stores we have close to were I live. Thanks!!! |
