->> Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with a Sony UP-DR200 Dye sub printer?
Also does anyone know a place in San Diego that I could rent one or try it out?
I'll be shooting a banquet in early May and the client would like on site printing. Setup would be a Nikon DSLR to Aperture to the Sony Printer.
Also any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance. |

->> its a great printer actually. Very fast.
I have the snap lab....cause i wanted to be able to use it without a laptop. Works great as well...something to consider.
ImagingSpectrum.com is where i get all my stuff...they can probably help you out. |

| ->> Thanks Brad for the input. The Sony doesn't need ink or toner right? Everything is contained in the roll of medium? |

->> When you buy Sony media it comes in two parts (film/paper) that should be changed out together. It is a very clean and easy system to work with.
Another + for the Snap Lab |

| ->> Kirby thats correct, its all quite tidy. And....i just updated the firmware on my snaplab....the new pro matte finish is very nice indeed. Its pretty much just like luster paper from the photo lab, which is a substantial improvement. Its all done on the same paper, it just adds a finishing step to the existing paper to add the texture. |

->> I just purchased, and used for the first time this weekend, the Sony UP-DR80 and was very impressed. I will be getting rid of my old Kodak 6800 and purchase another UP-DR80. That printer pushes out 8x10's at 1 per minute at a total cost of $1 and allows me to choose glossy, matte or lustre finishes and sizes from 5x7 to 8x12 all from the same printer. At a cost of around $1100 I think its hard to beat.
Bottom line, unless you are sold on the DR200 I'd recommend checking out the DR80. Its only $100 more and offers more sizes, but I think you will be happy with the quality of the unit and the prints. |

| ->> Speed is the thing you give up with that one though. The Updr-200 is lightning fast per print. Depending on the event, time is money. IMO, a better solution is a fast printer for small prints (4x6 5x7's) and a 2nd printer that does 8" prints is the way to go. Seems I remember Mitsubishi had one that printed very nice for about half that much. Cant remember the model number right off hand though. |

| ->> The slowest print is an 8x10 at about 60 seconds. For my use having 1 printer that can print both 8x10's and 5x7's with 3 different finishes is a big plus. I guess it depends on the individual photographer and their needs. I only sell 8x10's and 5x7's on site so its a perfect fit or me. |

->> Thanks Guys, I really appreciate the input. But one more question. I'm trying to learn more about the snap lab option you two posted about.
Can I tether my nikon to the machine and have an assistant just print them without a computer then?
Does it have an internal hard drive?
Does it attach to the UP-DR200?
With this system does the "assistant" have to have a photo background? |
