Tripod vs. Handheld video
Erik Markov, Photographer

->> Just curious what everyone's opinion is on shooting video, no matter what kind of camera is used, and using stabilization whether its a tripod or handheld in some manner (a shoulder stock mount etc) and how often you use a certain method. Trying to figure out what would be most appropriate to purchase first that I would get the most use out of.

->> If you're shooting at 30fps your normal shutter speed is around 1/30th of a second.

Use a tripod whenever possible.

->> Erik - the long answer is: you want a mix of the two. If you shoot all tripod - or all handheld - your piece will suffer at some point due to lack of variety - or as Jim says: at certain points you HAVE to have a tripod...

What do I do? I have a shoulder mount that I can quickly slap onto a tripod... two units with quick uses back and forth. That doesn't solve your $$ issue...

So if you are just starting - I'll echo Jim's advice: get a good tripod (or use the one you already have) and buy the nicest fluid head (video head - NOT STILL HEAD) you can afford.

Good luck!

->> I bought an Induro C313 tripod and a Manfrotto 501HDV fluid head both for less than $400. It is very light weight, is really stable when all I am putting on it is a 5DmkII or 7D. As for handheld shooting, I have a Cavision shoulder mount that I NEVER use because I prefer simply snugging the camera up to my eye with a HoodLoupe that has the cinema straps. Its more comfortable to me and I have WAY more flexibility with my shots than when I have the whole shoulder rig. And additionally, the viewfinder piece that comes with the Cavision rig sucks (in my opinion), so again the HoodLoupe is a great piece to have. So, to sum things up, all of the stabilization that I use, tripod and handheld, total just over $500.
