Photojournalist aims for sites that can't afford wires

->> I read this profile out of the Nieman Journalism Lab that goes into detail about Lauren Victoria Burke, who started her own monthly subscription service out of DC called WDCPIX.

In her own words:
“Basically what you want to do is…create a business model that can undercut the bigger sites. There are a lot of news entities out there that can’t afford Associated Press or Getty or any of those guys."
She seems reasonably successful in the growing political blog market, where it looks like there are a lot of sites willing to pay, albeit not much, for legitimate usage of photos.
I know several members here are part of collectives or have their own smaller-scale sports wire services, which may or may not operate in a similar fashion, but I wanted to toss this out there and see what other members here thought of her business model and its implications industry-wide. |
