OT-WHAT is a "dribble drive"?

->> Thank God I haven't heard this term used much in the Big Dance, but in watching NIT coverage today, I heard the term "dribble drive" which I have heard a great deal during the season. WTF!! It's like fingernails down a chalk board to me! I mean, what other way IS there to drive the lane than to dribble? If you don't dribble, you're shooting or traveling. When and how did this term come into the play-by-play vernacular? What did I miss? I never got the memo!
Next we'll hear "...and now for men's football on ESPN! and after that, women's softball!" |

| ->> They mentioned it during the Duke-Cal game, referencing the penetration Cal was making by dribbling into the lane. Maybe a better way to put it would be "pass penetration vs dribble penetration," but "dribble drive" sounds better. |

->> A couple of years ago it was: "He takes his man to the elbow", or "Off the elbow the pass goes to the corner."
The newest hot shot announcer speak is: "This team needs to score the basketball!" Or: "This kid really knows how to score the ball!"
I guess that is opposed to scoring with the ladies. But on the court, what lese are you goung to score with?
Every announcer, from NBA TV guys to HS radio hacks feels the need to embelish the game...why not just call the game and leave the cute stuff to Hot Rod. |

->> Hi Michael,
That's exactly what I'm talking about. There's no need to make reference to "dribble" in any context. Everyone knows when you say "Penetration" as it pertains to making a move to the goal, you are dribbling the ball. Announcers are showing their stupidity when they do that. Trying too hard to be hip and cool.
I also like when they say "What's the key to the game, Bob?" Bob says "Well, team A is going to have to stop team B and then put the ball in the hoop on the other end". Hmmm.... Deep, deep analysis... Incredibly salient insight.
Again, why don't they say "Men's football"?
I know, in the grand scheme of things, it's not the end of the world, but it's just one of those things that make you go "ARRRGH!" |

->> Phil,
I feel the same as well.
One that I hear and read a lot from photographers that just bugs me is when they are captioning images and place NFL Football or MLB Baseball, NHL Hockey etc... in the headline. Football is already in the NFL part as baseball is in the MLB part as well as Hockey.
come on say it with me now,
National Football League Football
Major League Baseball Baseball
National Hockey League Hockey
yeah, sounds pretty stupid right?
you could go on and on...
it is a small trivial thing but it bugs the cr*p out of me. |

| ->> Phill, Dribble Drive is basically pushing the ball down court before the other team can setup their defense. Literally straight to the basket as fast as they can run so you gotta have pretty good guards. Calipari brought this offense to Kentucky this year and it seems to be working out pretty well. |

->> Phil,
The term has been around NBA play-by-play for decades. The late Chick Hearn of the Lakers used it along with many unique "Chickisms" like, "The mustard's off the hot dog now."

Thanks, Matt, Calipari got it from a junior college coach from Fresno, Vance Walberg, now an assistant at UMass. I'm well familiar with the offense, as I officiated it in Fresno when Walberg was coach at Clovis West High School. But it's basically a fast break with a twist. Works great on MTM defenses, not so much on zones run with discipline (Hence, the lack of success with it at UMass). The term "dribble drive" is now being used by PBP guys anytime any player drives the lane. Just makes me crazy... (I know, I need a life)... |

Matt - I hadn't scanned thru that since Christmas and forgot the reference was actually there.
Second, I haven't seen the apparently now forgotten "the ball came out" |

| ->> A "dribble-drive" is when the player starts with the ball while stationary, then makes a move towards the basket while beginning to dribble... as opposed to dribbling the ball continuously then moving to the basket. |
