->> My old trusty Gitzo G1276 finally died and I need a new ball head with quick release plates. Any suggestions for medium weight model? Thanks.

->> I recommend the Arca Swiss style QR plate system. All my heads have been equipped with them for the last 15 years and they are the best. I like the Kirk Photo plates and I have one for each of my cameras, my 70-200 and my 400mm. They will not twist and need never come off.

As for medium heads the Slik ProBall is still great after all these years if you can find one. I use one for remotes and one for my medium tripod. That said you might want to look into the Giottos heads. I have one of their smaller heads for my small/hiking tripod and it's quite good and very reasonably priced. Bogen ball heads aren't that great and Gitzo ones are over priced. My big tripod head is a Graf Studiobal and is a beast but most likely more than you are looking for.

->> +1 for the Really Right Stuff products. The BH-55 ballhead is rock solid with long glass and is a great fit for a full size tripod. The BH-40 is a medium sized ballhead and will easily hold a 70-200 zoom. Be sure to get the quick release lever clamps. It makes changing cameras very quick.

->> Not sure what you consider "medium weight" lens-wise, but the Acratech Ultimate Ballhead is pretty good too. It's designed for Arca Swiss plates and would work well for a 70-200 or even Canon's 100-400, but gets a bit flimsy when you get up in the 300 2.8 range. If you need to support something that big, then the BH-55 may be the best option.

->> Just got a new Gitzo Center Ball head (GH3781QR). Pretty amazing holding strength, especially for the size and weight.
