->> I know this is some way in advance right now but as a London based photographer I was just wondering if anybody had any insight into opportunities for local freelancers at such major events?
Obviously the major agencies send armies of their own staff and have local shooters in place already but what about smaller agencies/individual titles? In the age of the major wire services are there really opportunities left for individual shooters? My guess would be that for the major events - track and field etc, things will be pretty well covered and access impossible. Perhaps this isn't the case for the less popular sports.
I ask this now as I figure I have the next year to make sure I have a diverse/high quality sporting portfolio in place for when any opportunities may arise. Obviously it's something I'd love to be involved in but I have no idea how realistic that is.
Any thoughts/experiences much appreciated. |

| ->> Chris, check the archives on Olympic shooting. It sounds like freelancers can't really get credentialed any more. |

| ->> Yeah I'll do that Max, was more wondering what the chances are of getting work as a stringer with agencies that can. |

->> Chris,
Never too early to start at credentialing will take place sooner than many are ready.
It can not hurt to contact major agencies and express your interest and local angle. With budgets as they are more and more folks may turn to hiring someone local to fill out staff rather than pay travel and overtime.
But, it's a hard get.
You may look at contacting the London Organizing Committee about venue manager jobs. Each venue has a photo manager who helps photographers get access and control shooters who try to get out of bounds. Usually these go to experienced folks and the positions pay. Some positions on the OLY photo staffs are for volunteers (no pay) but some are paid. |

->> Thanks Geoff,
I certainly don't expect it will be easy but you certainly don't get if you don't try. Always good to have something to aim at to push your photography forward as well... even if it proves fruitless in the end. |
