->> OK--so WHICH pocket wizards do I need..
got a sweet camera mount for bicycle handlebars..both of my sons are racing in the 4X Nationals in Fontana, CA in 2 weeks..want to mount the camera on his bike. so what do I need? I also want to be able to use it at basketball..and have the mounted camera on the backstop fire at the same time my handheld fires for under the basket action with and without strobes. There are so many choices, not sure which I need.
THANKS!!!
(FYI-4x is similar to the snowboard cross in the Olympics..sort of like downhill BMX on 26" wheel with gears. 4 man gate. no rules. great action-- )

->> Hi Jayne,

If you want to fire two cameras at the same time, with strobes, you will need the Pocket Wizard Multimaxes. Follow the instructions from Robert Beck here
http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1709

If you want to fire two cameras at the same time, without strobes, you can use the Pocket Wizard Plus II transceivers, which are cheaper than Multimaxes.

In either set-up, you will need a pre-trigger cord to go from the PW's to your camera. You can buy them from Pocket Wizards or from places like paramountcords.com

Are you a Nikon or Canon shooter?

Hope this helps,

Daniel

->> Thanks!! Shoot Nikon. I want to have the option to do both, so seems like the Multimaxes are the way to go.

->> I will assume your camera mount will be used as a test for a few practice runs during your sons 4X event? The cameras add a lot of weight to the bars and can really throw off steering on a bike. Launching some of the gaps I've seen on a Nationals 4X course, no chance I would have a camera on my handlebars.

Back to your original question of PW's though, if you only want to fire your handheld camera and a remote camera, the PW Plus 2 will do fine... or any PW model for that matter. You just need the appropriate camera cord to miniphone from PW or FlashZebra.

If you want to trigger a handheld and lights OR a remote and lights, Plus 2's will be fine. That is a big OR... not AND.

If you want to trigger a handheld, a remote and a set of lights all in sync, you're in a whole different ballpark and need PW MultiMax units in order to set delays.

->> Any pocket wizard will work well. Multimaxes just have a couple of extra features like extra channels (probably necessary at larger events), delays (useful for remotes+strobes), custom channels, etc.

It does however sound like an incredibly bad idea to risk your kid's safety for a shot... Camera mounts aren't made for that...

Jane save yourself THREE times the money on the cords. This is functionally the same cable for 1/3 the $$$. I swear by this company since getting turned onto them by the Alien Bees (here we go again) website.

I'm an idiot, but in my defense, I am cranking out T&I's and checking the board between uploads.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who got back to me on my Q&A emergency.
