Sprint Smart Phones?

->> Hi -- A non-photographer colleague of mine is looking for her first smart phone. She is not a photog or heavy business user. She has Sprint so her choices include several BlackBerries, Palms and various WinMo and Android devices.

Basically, she wants web access, e-mail, calendar, contacts, etc. -- the stuff most smart phones offer.

She is not a very techy person so the OS and sync systems need to be pretty painless. Likewise, she's a Yahoo user for her e-mail and calendars and needs to be able to communicate with that stuff too.

She is really considering the HTC Hero which runs Android. I only played with Android on the Verizon/Moto Droid demo and wasn't impressed -- I think the problem was more the phone than the OS itself. But none of my friends have/use an Android device and thus I really can't offer her any solid advice on that OS or on HTC phones themselves.

Palm -- I loved my Treo. I've played with the Pre in stores and thought it was very cool. The Pre OS seems smooth. But, I don't know any Pre users and haven't discussed "real world" use of it.

BlackBerry -- I suggested that she avoid BlackBerries since I think they require too much OS/software maintenance (yes, I'm a disgruntled/recovering Storm user). Moreover, the multi-media thing appeals to her and that's not what BlackerBerries are really about.

WinMo? Well, I am an Apple snob and I am not a Windows fan. But, that opinion is based solely on their PC OSs. However, I am inclined to speculate that calls itself Windows anything will suck.

Sooooo ... I turn to you for advice, so that I can pass it off as my own =^) Seriously though, I am interested in your opinions and experiences with various Smart Phones and their accompanying OSs.

Thank you all in advance.

The WebOS seamlessly syncs with yahoo, gmail, etc. The only learning curve is the gestures, and once that's done, it's a fabulous simple interface.

->> Michael,

I own a Pre. It's a tough little phone, the sync is pretty much automatic once you give it your email address and password(while on my iPhone, I had to enter MS Exchange info to connect to google)

Contacts, Calendars, and Email can all sync wirelessly with Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.

So what's the problem? The company is in a huge decline. Very few apps, the keyboard is not blackberry big, so while it's a real keyboard its not that great. Even with the firmware, the thing just isn't that fast, even when you're not multitasking. It can play media, but it's just not that fun a phone. Oh, and annoying quirks, like the gestures. The worst thing though? You can't hang up on a single caller when you have taken two lines. you either have them hang up or disconnect both (and this is not in a 3 way call, but rather in a back and forth line switch call)

I probably would have gotten an Android phone had it been out in September for Sprint, BUT my biggest problem with most Android phones is that theyre made by HTC (at least on Sprint), and I hate HTC phones. they always feel cheap, break down, and are more concerned about pushing new phones out.

Any specific questions, lemme know
