| ->> I generally use WD My books with the triple interface, but I want a new drive, 1-2TB for video storage and editing and wondered if one was better than the other for it. An eSATA would be nice, but I can only connect via Firewire 800/400. Just plunk down on another MyBook or is there a better solution? |

->> are you using the drive strictly to store, our will you be accessing the assets off the drive while you are mastering?
if you're just storing, then it doesn't make a difference.
but if you're going to access the files, then you might want to consider a RAID b/c the access times for both reads/writes will be lower. |

| ->> Scott. If you're looking for an external scratch disk, you might check out www.oyendigital.com. They have some nice drives at good prices. I have a 2.5-inch drive and it has USB e-Sata, Firwire 400 & 800. I think you can get a 3.5-inch disk with the capacity for which you are looking. |

| ->> The drive will be video only storage and editing scratch. I have a DROBO that is the redundant for all my photo drives and computer drives, but now need to add video. I am also using it to edit with my Macbook Pro when in the field, since my iMac can't really handle editing Final Cut projects I've determined. I was thinking of an eSata and Firewire 800 connected drive and use either the firewire, or buy an eSata expresscard to work with it. I have a documentary I am putting together and will use the drive to store and edit, along with other video projects. |

->> I have to second the Other World Computing drives.
They are very quiet and fast.
Best yet, you can actually talk to a customer service person.
The first drive they sent me was dead on arrival. This is very rare but happens with all brands.
When I called their customer service, they had a new drive on the way, before I even shipped them the bad one.
They were fast and reasonable. |

->> I own this system and it has worked nice for me.
It's an ICY DOCK 4-bay external enclosure: http://tinyurl.com/dn83tm
Installed are 4 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB internal harddrives: http://tinyurl.com/5g355w
It connects to either USB or eSATA. The only downside is there is no FireWire port, so your connectivity is limited, unless all your computers have eSATA connections.
I have it set up to where two drives are on RAID-0. I'm still trying to find a way to set up each 2-drive set to a single RAID-1 so I have a backup.
It's a bit pricy, but it works phenomenally. |
