->> I can remember pushing T-Max 3200 to 6400 (to shoot Penn State soccer) using a "home brewed" processing method to try to minimize grain. It worked well -- rice crispy sized grain (no pun intended) had an endearing quality.
ISO 12,800 looking that good -- simply amazing! Nice stuff Bert. |

| ->> Here's a question for Bert. Before the advent of the really high quality really high iso digital cameras would you have been using on camera strobe in this situation? I'm finding more and more that I'm eschewing the strobe for the available light, but I'm not doing anything remotely close to being as newsworthy / important as the Academy Awards. Seeing these photos makes me think that on camera strobe may quickly be a thing of the past. |

->> That's just sick (from a Canon user). This makes me a disappointed Canon user. It's frustrating that Canon's latest camera, Mark IV, isn't better than Nikon's D3s or even the D3. Canon needed to surpass Nikon with the Mark IV, not just equal it. This is not intended to turn this into a Canon vs Nikon debate.
Anyway, incredible work from you guys at the Oscars. It's just incredibly the image quality of the D3s at high iso.

Which lens(es) were you using? 14-24 by any chance?

->> Nice pics Bert and to Bob as well. The exact reason I am halfway through the Canon to Nikon switch. Sitting beside Bob for all those CMA's had me jealous.
Mark...you had the pic of the night. Great shot! |

->> Great photos Bert.
And Mark, we actually used that photo on our Web site today. Definitely an awesome candid shot (I bet they weren't expecting you to take that).
As far as cameras go, I haven't had an opportunity to try out my 5DII at higher ISOs than 4,000. I haven't really been in a situation where I'd need it. But even at 4,000, it's still sharp enough with little noise to run in a newspaper. |

| ->> I shot with a 400mm at 12800 ISO during commercial breaks in the theatre...very impressed by the quality. The D3S had some focus issues though...hopefully it was just that camera. |

| ->> Cool. Which 400 were you using? The focus could be a problem with the lens and not the camera. My stuff with the D3s was remarkably sharp. |

| ->> we rented the lens from samys...but i shot some stuff with it before with a 70-200 and the gov ball with a 14-24 and it was still having problems...it was sharp the times it was in focus and those came out beautiful. |

Or not to Flash?
That was the question for me backstage at the Academy Awards ... and I write a bit about it on the Sports Shooter Academy wesbite:
