Nikon D3 -- Overheating?

->> I've had problems with my D3 and wanted to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Yesterday I shot a High School Baskeball tourney and in 6 hours and 10 minutes I shot 1736 frames then the camera stopped writing to the card and when I went to turn it off, it would not--had to take the battery out to shut it down. Also none of the back display worked. Now that it has set overnight is appears to be working again. This camera has been to Nikon twice in the past few months for the same problem... I didn't realize that is would work again after sitting--once it went down I packed it up and sent it in for NPS repair. The last time it was in, the techs initially said they couldn't find anything wrong, but by the time I called in they said after running it a long time they got it to fail and did a repair. Anyone else had this problem, I didn't think shooting like that was really that excessive. Please no Nikon vs Cannon Slams.. looking for real advice or confirmation of a problem with the camera.

->> Tom I have shot many times that number in a 12 hour day of hockey coverage and never had that problem. Last summer during baseball tourneys the camera would get almost too hot to hold and still worked fine. The hood on my 300 was hot enough to burn my forearm.

Looks like it need to go back to NPS one more time.

->> I have plenty of fellow runway fashion photographer friends that shoot 500-1000 photos with their D3's in a 10-12 minute span, 7-8 times a day, for a week straight and never heard of this problem nor with any brand actually. Good luck with NPS.

->> Tom, I'd see if Nikon would replace it as it seems to be a recurring event for you but they can't replicate it as they probably don't test it that long.

Let alone I can easily take 10000+ shots in a 8 hour span and have no problems what so ever.

What are you using for memory cards? Not that it probably matters, but might be part of the issue.

->> overheating, camera won't shut off until battery is pulled, I'd look at the battery. I think I've had a similar problem with the Mark III at times, it doesn't seem to respond to buttons being pushed etc and only thing to do is pull the battery to reset it and sometimes trying another battery.

Is it possible with the D3 batteries to see the performance of them or recalibrate them like the Canons? Possibly a battery or batteries aren't operating right or there is a physical problem with their condition, bad contacts or the camera's internal contacts. If Nikon sent it back "fixed" and it's still doing it, you might need to write everything down about what you were doing at the time it happened to have some evidence for yourself to figure out what the exact problem is i.e. shooting such and such for x hours using certain battery in a hot environment or cold or raining etc. Writing the details down for several such incidents can help to figure out the issue. It sucks I know with spending the money we do on equipment but sometimes we have to be our own slueths on these problems.

->> Thanks for all the replys, after I got it to my event the next day, the camera only lasted 20-30 frames before it started acting up again, multiple batteries tried and several cards. Off to NPS once again. I just hadn't heard of anyone having the same problem so I guess it is an isolated issue with this one.

Thanks
