Copyright Outside of Photography?

->> I'm just wondering, how does "copyright" and “work for hire” as well as rights to "intellectual property" work outside of photography?
Would anyone know how musicians, actors, directors cinematographers, writers or any other creatives deal with work for hire and copyright? Especially when you are a famous actor, musician, director, author or any other creative. In the end does a motion picture studio own the rights outright to the entire movie and your image in that movie? When you are a famous musician and record a big album or a hit song who owns the right to that work? Or do musicians and actors and cinematographers and so forth turn over their right to their intellectual property for a huge clump of dalla-dalla billz to a studio or a record company?
Just wondering..... would anyone know? |

->> Just as in photography, it varies according to the agreement. However, in major motion pictures, you can pretty-much assume that everybody is working under an agreement that turns over copyright to the owner of the overall work.

| ->> Mark, if that is the case. do actors just sign and say pay me this many millions for my image? or is it based on how well the movie does after it is made? (i'm sure the contract and terms are prolly long.) |

->> It depends on the actor and the production company. Big names have more clout. Up-and-comers might be working for Screen Actors Guild minimums.
Is this about a real-life situation?

| ->> No, i'm just wondering how all this legal stuff takes place outside of photography b/c i doubt that the cinematographer or the actor has any rights to the movie.... or if the musician deals with the same thing. this can probably shine some light on how some of the photography rights decisions are made.... and should be made. |

->> The motion picture business works much differently than the photography business. Most major productions are done under union contracts. The individual workers are considered as employees and therefore do not retain any rights to the work they create.
