->> I thought this was pretty cool. Seattle Times photographer John Lok took this video while waiting in line to get a field of play shooting position for women's figure skating. By 7:30am, all FOP positions for the evening event were reserved.

->> Not cool if you're here. The competition did not start until 5 p.m. and the final group, the real contenders, did not skate until 8:06 p.m.
Whoever made the decision to remove media ticketing for the skating events is not a popular person here in Vancouver among the photographers. With a ticket you know you are guaranteed a spot and though you may want to go early to try to make sure you get a specific spot, there would be no reason to show up 14 hours before the event like some people felt they had to in order to get a position for the women's final night. |

| ->> Any idea why the change was made? This seems like a ridiculously grueling way to do things. |

| ->> This is the #1 reason - and likely one of the only reason - that I don't like shooting the Olympics... instead of organizing this carefully - it's a free for all - and you end up having to cover 1/2 to 1/3 of what you could - because you're busy getting to venues early and waiting....and waiting...and waiting.... it's sad... the professionals that go to these Olympics all deserve better - either a well thought out system that relates to the number of potential people that the press organization delivers to... or a lottery.... first come first server when you have 500+ (may not be correct here) photographers covering the games and 36 spots... is INSANE and almost on the verge of being amateurish... |

| ->> That's completely brutal...and indeed, there's no good reason for it. |

->> No one is sure why the change. It was announced early that all skating sessions would be ticketed then as the games progressed they lifted the ticketing.
About the only thing remaining with tickets have been the Canada men's hockey games -- and the gold medal match on Sunday no matter who makes it.
The worst day was of the pairs free skate. It was announced as ticketed. Everyone took time to go to their country's Olympic Committee and sign up for a spot, wait for the list of recipients to be posted and then take the time to go back and pick up the ticket in time for the event.
Then in the middle of the day they lift the ticketing requirement. This is very bad because some may have planned their days to cover something else and then go to their designated zone at skating. But with ticketing being lifted the day of those people could then lose out on a spot to someone who never bothered with trying to get a ticket. |

->> Yeah, I've been mentioning it on my blog each day at ice skating.
I did three days of skating this week and think I spent more than 40 hours in that arena with maybe 12 actually shooting. The rest of the time was spent securing my spot in the overhead position that has a place to put the computer and power and an Internet connection so I can file quickly. After each group of 5 or 6 skates I put out at least two pics for each with more for the top skaters and Americans.
Thankfully I did hockey today instead of short track so my time at the Pacific Coliseum is done. |
