->> This is a great piece.
One thing struck me as being a little odd to me, and some of the comments on YouTube echoed this.
Isn't he allowing his video on YouTube for free? Or, is this unauthorized? If he's not being paid for this documentary clip (or countless others on YouTube), then isn't he technically doing what he is preaching against?
Just a point that came to mind.
I agree that he is pretty dead-on, though. I told someone that you need to change your attitude from an ego-boosting "see my name in the paper" one to a "put food on the table" one. That, is what I think separates a pro from am amateur on the most basic level. |

->> Great clip - it really inspired me somehow. Here are my favorites quotes from the piece (items in parentheses are my addition).
"Everybody else may be an asshole but I'm not." in response to being told that everybody else is doing it for nothing.
"There's no publicity value. The only value for me is if you put money in my hand."
"They always want the writer (photographer) to work for nothing and the problem is there are so many G-D writers (photographers) who have no idea they are supposed to be paid every time they do something."
"I don't take a piss without getting paid."
Love it.

->> Jason,
To the point of using the video for free...at least one guy paid him. Kind of a cute story

->> I'm not sure how well known this guy's story is, but he sued and settled with James Cameron (yes, *that* James Cameron) because he believed that the ideas behind Terminator were based on two of his episodes of "The Outer Limits". They ended up settling out of court.
This guy fought for what he thought was rightfully his. |

"I don't take a piss without getting paid". That is the attitude you need. Feel free to use Harlan's monologue next time some asshole tries the free schtick on you. You won't get any money, but you'll feel a whole lot better. Think I'll use this in my other business as a motivation presentation.
I think I've got a new hero... |
