->> you could, of course, join the NPPA to get a look at the internship database.
Kevin Martin's Visual Student blog is a must, too. |

->> Ditto Dave P's tongue-in-cheek post. I help judge intern portfolios at my paper, and when I see cover letters with crappy syntax and spelling, they go right to the bottom of the pile, or the trash. A competing candidate with great attention to detail, but with a slightly less impressive portfolio (within reason), gets the nod every time.
Get that job, THEN you can lose the attention to detail. ;-) |

->> Jabin,
I don't think think the main forum is the right...word please...forum for this question but hey you're just finding out so that's okay too.
I looked at your ss page and it looks like you are further along than where I thought you would be because of your posts.
Now there are a lot of unhappy doomsayers in this site who gave up on the NPPA while I was still tilting all my sports photos, embarrassingly enough just a couple of years ago.
The NPPA is a great resource! On several occasions people have found me on that listing and offered me a gig with a very decent rate. Thus, being a member, a student member like me, really pays off.
The NPPA internship listing is NOT what it used to be. It's outdated and even archaic. What is slide film? And why is it okay :) However, I can tell you that people like Kevin Martin and Michael P. King are working on it and it should be better than ever very soon.
Now, most of the big and many of the medium size internships have been filed but there are a lot of small internships out there. Think about where you want to work, which director of photography you like, very important IMHO, and what newspaper you want to be associated with. I would not encourage to you e-mail the dp directly but a picture editor and quickly ask who is the internship coordinator.
In the past, the Journalism Jobs website had many offerings but I do not know if this is still true.
Lastly, your school is important in this regard. I cannot tell you how many times an e-mail has been sent my way with an unannounced internship or job opening. Get on your advisor's good list and on the program director's favor. Prove to them they can recommend you fully and you should get some opportunities your way.
NPPA member since 2007. |
