Baseball is coming up

->> Okay, so baseball season is coming around the corner here in Brookings, SD. And last year was my first attempt at shooting it. I shot with a Tamron 18-270mm and never got a clear shot. So that basically cancels out that lens for this season. However, I have come to obtain a canon 70-200mm IS f/2.8L lens. When shooting with a shorter lens... what do I do? ha ha
There is an opening at each end of the dug outs, both close to the plate and first base. Any shot suggestions? Or does anyone have a 1.4 extender (preferably the newer series)?
I am really big on sports, but also look for the more artistic sides of sports as well. Later this week I will have my portfolios updated on my smugmug site, so if you care to check it out and give me a quick critique that would be awesome. Thanks! |

->> How about a 300 f/4 or a 100-400IS?
Both of those would get you closer in decent light. |

| ->> Thanks, but I am shooting on a very tight budget. If I wasn't it would be much easier haha |

->> Limit yourself to areas that you can effectively photograph with the 70-200. So forget about plays in the outfield. And don't stress out over getting plays at second base....they are out of your effective reach.
Hang out around home plate, and be ready for plays there (know when the chance for plays at the plate is higher). Focus on the first or third basemen and be ready for them to dive for a line drive.
After looking at your smugmug site, here's some general things:
Look around the field to find some clean backgrounds, and wait for things to happen in front of them. Your backgrounds are as important as your subjects...sometimes more important.
If you can shoot from a lower angle, do it.
Set your lens to 200mm and put gaff tape on the zoom ring. Learn to shoot tight, even if it's uncomfortable.
Concentrate on getting people's faces.
Good luck this season! |

->> Robby, I understand about being on a budget. I use a 1.4 extender, Ver. 1, on my 70-200 2.8L and have gotten good results. When shooting HS baseball or any youth ball, You can get decent results shooting plays at second base or home plate. third and the outfield might be a stretch but if you have a camera with lots of megapixels, anything is possible. And try to shoot at 4.0 if you are using an extender.
I know lots of photographers think that the quality is degraded using an extender on a 70-200 but for me, working at a newspaper, it is good combination, especially on a budget.
In fact, I shot HS baseball today and it was COLD and I live in Arkansas.
Good luck

->> Brad, thanks so much for sharing that article, great help.
I'm just starting shooting baseball for the first time, and that's helped me start thinking differently about what to look for and should definitely help me improve my shooting. Thank you! |
