A Success Story - thinkTank

->> I am lucky enough to write and shoot a monthly "success" story for one of the bodybuilding and fitness magazines, now going on for almost 3 years. It is very uplifting to tell the story of people who have overcome some adversity such as alcohol or drug abuse, disease or handicap.

Yesterday I came across a different kind of success story that I wanted to relate, because again I find it uplifting and motivating. And that story is thinkTank and the man who has perhaps been the driving force in it's success, Doug Murdoch. And no, they don't know I am writing this.

We all know thinkTank and their presence here on SportsShooter for some time. I met Doug some time back when he first started making the rounds at shows and conferences showing the products to photographers and such. Yesterday at the PMA trade show in Anaheim I again saw Doug in the thinkTank booth and saw from the crowds and the number of employees working the booth his obvious success. Doug related that it was essentially his 5 year anniversary having first started out showing thinkTank, not even having a booth, but wandering about the show getting people to come see the bags and gear in his hotel room.

The story was a stark contrast to the many sad stories I heard yesterday from other photographers barely getting by and struggling amidst the woes of the economy and the state of affairs in the industry. And although the success of thinkTank does not mitigate or help those directly, it does give one thought as to how we might get ahead. By offering something different, better, and forging ahead with full belief in what we do and where we are going. And when necessary, changing direction and overcoming the status quo.

By the way, thinkTank was showing a new, at least to me, line of canvas bags that looked really great.

Anyway, the mood I did get from around the show was that the business of photography is improving from last year, but more changes are ahead. We will need to be not only creative in what we create but in how and where we will be applying our talents.

But let us not forget that there is always the opportunity ahead, and the success of thinkTank is an applicable story and always has been.

It is refreshing to deal with a company who listens to their customers, who allows you to speak with a real person on the phone, who stands by their products.
I'm not a wealthy person but I do firmly believe in buying quality products even if they cost more. I would rather buy a bag for $350 and have it last than buying 6 bags for $100 each which break after a few months of use.
I do not hide my support for Think Tank (as I'm sure you have seen in previous posts). I only wish Doug and his team the best of success.

It's a US company that makes products for photogs by photogs.

Like Tim, I don't mind spending a bit more for a great quality product that I know is just going to work.

->> I agree totally with Nic and Tim.
Except for one Domke bag I take to basketball games I am exclusive Think Tank. It was designed by photographers for photographers. I do not mind paying more for quality. Like Nic said it does not hurt it is an american company. I have had a couple of small issues and each a real person answered the phone and bent over backwards to take care of my issue. Keep up the great work Doug!!!
