In the market for a new 300mm

->> Has anyone had experience of both the Nikkor f4 and the Sigma f2.8 HSM.

The Nikkor is half the price, but a whole stop?

Anyones thoughts would be appreciated.

->> f4 is nice for day games and places with enough light. Even with a D3 at some point f4 becomes a limiter. Also keep in mind that f4 on on the 300 f4 is not the same as f4 on the 300 2.8. Different glass, optics, groupings, and transmission properties.

As for the Sigma... I have no experience with that lens and have never had much luck with off brand gear. I have a Tokina 28-80 2.8 lens that is held together with rubber bands and epoxy. Sadly its been that way from about the 2nd year I've owned it.

->> I have extensively used both versions of Nikon's 300 f4. Both versions are sharp and in good light they are excellent. I am still using an older 300 f4 Af now. Other benefits are obviously the lighter weight. For subject isolation and any low light work a f2.8 is really the way to go if you can afford it.
I haven't used the Sigma but a few shooters that I know have not had the best luck with them. Lots of sample variation between the lenses.

->> I have a tokina 300 f2.8 that I love. Yes, it's not a Nikon lens but for the price I paid it's great and the lens is sharp.

->> I've been shooting with a Sigma 120-300/f2.8 as my primary long glass for five or six years now. It does not focus as fast as Nikon's AF-S and it's a tad less sharp and contrasty, but still excellent. It works well with a 1.4x TC (I use a Kenko) and the zoom range is awesome. It has one annoying problem, a perennially loose lens mount. Every month or so I have to tighten all the lens mount screws down.

For those on a budget, 3rd party glass can be a viable option. Lots of folks here swear by the Sigma 120-300. A few have hated it.
