How to repair rubber zoom ring
Rick Hiebert, Photographer

->> Does anyone have a home remedy for repairing a slightly stretched ring on a Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens?

I've never removed it and part of it is still tight, but about half has come loose and always wants to slip out of the grove and onto the lens barrel. Doing this seems to have stretched the rubber ever so slightly and its not tight any longer.

Is there a way to shrink it a touch and/or re-glue it? What kind of glue would one use?

Thanks for any suggestions.

you don't want to glue it -- if it's loose, the rubber has just worn out. just send it back to nikon to replace it, or if you ever see an event with NPS, they sometimes have rubber rings with them.

i had a 28-70mm replaced at the eddie adams workshop. had the same probs as you're describing.

->> Agreed. Send to Nikon and have them replace it. DO NOT use glue. You'll regret it.

As you already told , just send it to Nikon to replace it.

Nikon is known by their glue issues :) .

->> I called Nikon parts at the number Greg Francis posted about a month ago and ordered a ring. I took off the tripod foot, put the ring on the lens from the bottom and now it works great. The only issue I encountered was that the ring I was sent was slightly shorter than the original ring, so the new ring didn't fill the groove entirely. Still, the ring is snug and works like a champ.
