->> I currently shoot a canon 50D, and am looking to add to my sports bodies. What are your thoughts on the 1D2? How is it in comparrison to my current camera? Better? Worse?
Please let me know your thoughts, I would be very grateful.
Thanks! |

| ->> The 50d is better with High ISO, but not by much, and Battery life. The 1dmkII is better in every other way. |

->> AF is far and away better. 1d II has a larger, brighter viewfinder, nicer body, faster fps rate.
I wasn't under the impression that the 50d was better at handling noise, but I haven't done any comparisons, so I won't comment on that further.
And if the 50d's battery performs better than the 1d II's... well damn I'm impressed.
You can't go wrong with this beast of a camera. |

->> Without even testing the 50D, I totally agree with David.
The AF on any Canon camera other than 1D series is crippled. It's been that way ever since they came out with the D30 (the first Canon digital camera). I shot with the 10D and 20D before I threw in the towel and skipped the rest of that family of cameras.
I do wonder though if the 50D has better AF than my 5D Mark II? That might be too close to call. |

->> Darren,
I guess it depends on which AF points you use, which lens you pair the bodies up with, and how you determine "better".
At the center point for both cameras the 5dmkII is more accurate than the 50d.
The outer points on the 5dmkII however are not very reliable compared to the 50d.
Servo on the 5dmkII is rather slow but can be used for sports, while I have found it to be a bit faster on the 50d, but not nearly as accurate with the center point only. |

->> I actually was just faced with the same decision as you. I opted to keep my 50D as a backup and picked up a 1D Mark II yesterday. I have it paired with a 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS lens, so I know I can never blame the glass.
My first chance to test it - the AF seems MUCH faster. Not to mention the fps is out of this world when compared to my 50D. The ISO, I will find out tomorrow during a NCAA basketball game, but today was a bad place to compare since it was amateur ice hockey with HORRIBLE lighting and having to shoot through glass (no portholes).
I'll post tomorrow after I give it a run. I am already leaning towards anything in this 1D class outperforming the 50D.
And almost forgot, I believe that the 1D is the only "weatherproof" body in the Canon line. I could be wrong, but I know that my 50 isn't.
Now, what to do with my 40D that was hardly ever used? |

->> I was using a 40D for almost two years when I decided to try a 1D series camera and got a Mark IIN. Best decision I've ever made.
Now, the camera has taken some getting used to, especially with the different controls but worth it. I shot basketball last week, using the Mark IIn and the 40D and I go so frustrated with the 40D's AF.
Now, when I shot a wedding, I used the 40D because of the higher resolution but I did use the Mark IIn as a second body.
If you can get a Mark II n at a reasonable price, go for it. I got mine on Ebay for $925

->> I also agree with Mark. I use my 50D for anything other than sports. It seems to like my 580EX II flash system better and, quite frankly, I already climbed that learning curve to achieve good shots.
But, for sports... the 1D MkII kicks it. |
